I like the idea of using this space. I don't want an open top box. I will find something that fits or maybe a weather resistant convas tool bag/
I can't wait to see what you come up with.... keep us posted. I'd love to have a top on the box but an open box is better than no storage at all.
Ok, I got this box from Amazon, http://www.amazon.com/Plano-Shallow-Dry ... plano+1412

It fits and has a tight sealing o-ring lid. It is not a tall box so the lid will still open enough after it is mounted which I hope to do this weekend. Will post apic of it in the truck asap...

Awesome idea. I was looking at this space today and was wondering what to do with it. As someone else said its weird to see this amount of free space in a newer vehicle. This is something I'm used to seeing in my 1980 z28 not something I expected in my 2013 silverado

Was successful in cutting down a battery box sides so the top would fit on and just tighten down with the nylon strip that comes with it. It isnt the greatest sealed cover but with a little JB Weld over the air holes on the top for the battery to breath, I think I will have a mostly water free container and for rags, jumpers and a few screw drives not being in the cab. Best $10-15 I have spent in awhile!

View attachment 1 Due to the corner brace, the lid only opens as much as shown in the picture but, I think it is enough..
Instead of mounting it and only being able to open the lid part way, why not strap it down and take it out when you need it?
Is it possible to pull it out easily or is it a PITA?

Thanks and I'm glad you guys like the idea. A few things I will have to say is make sure that whatever you put in the box is covered in plastic because it tends to get wet inside the box....that's why the drain holes are important. Also, remember, that whatever is in the box will go through heat cycles with the engine...some plastics might turn brittle over time, etc. My father back in the day always had a box like this under the hood but most trucks now don't have any extra space for storage. I couldn't believe that there was usuable space under the hood on a 2013!
Main reason I switched to GM after 24 yrs with the blue oval !!!! No room under the hood

This is really cool, I was looking into doing something with this space, I will have to do something like this in my current or newer truck depending on which one I have at the time.

AutoZone and Tractor Supply used to have these boxes too, although they may be bigger for deep cycle batteries

Strapping it down would work and if you are going to use it alot that may be better. The radiator hose touches mine when open but,

the lid flexes around it I have my jumper cables in there now.
