4.56 too tall?

Now Im finally getting to gearing it(3.73 to 4.56 on 34s). But, local mechanic said he wanted to drive it first. After he drove it, he said with the power I have I would probably be happier with 4.10s do to economy loss and going through 1st and 2nd gears to quick.

The guy who rebuilt the transmission told me 4.56s for better for lubrication and TC lock-up. (OEM TC)

He referred me to someone else who is more knowledgeable in this for a 2nd opinion and haven't called him yet.

Now I feel like Im at square 1

75% mainly city/country driving when unloaded. 5% occasionally moving equipment (10,000lbs across flat ground) no more than 10mi on county roads. 20% highway where I get up to 80mph max.

6l90 trans.
Stock set up 3.73 w/ 245/75r16
Currently running 295/70r18

? "better for lubrication" (presumably in the transmission)? This sounds nuts. The transmission will be (and better be) happly lubricated regardless of what the engine rpm is.
maybe work out how the driveshaft speed changes between the original gear ratio/original tire size, and both new gear ratios/new tire size, and pick the one that matches better?
Or get the truck tuned afterwards?

Sounds like the transmission builder poorly communicated the concept but im guessing he meant to say that the transmission's internal line pressure rise will happen faster, as measured in seconds, with an axle ratio like 4.56 compared to a taller ratio.

Just FYI…
Numerically higher numbers = shorter gears.

Numerically smaller numbers = taller gears

4.56 seems like a lot of gear for 34” tires.

These ought to help make the decision:

This is how your truck originally ran on the stock tires:

This is your setup now, it's basically like have a 3.42 gear:

This is your truck with your current tires with 4.10 gears. Your RPMs at 70 mph are pretty close to where she was with stock tires:

Here she is with 4.56 gears:

Your 1st and 2nd gear wouldn't be "too quick" with any of these ratios.

Just curious. I know that 4.10 was also a option.

Ive been running in m5 for a while now probably avg. speed of 60-65mph. Doesn't seem bad at all. Thats about 5% more than 6th with 4.56.

Sorry if Im talking in circles.

So consensus is 4.10s?

Honestly, with the driving you said you do, and occasional towing I would go 4.56. It will drive nicer and feel like it’s got more pep around town and on back roads, and also will tow better. And with the limited highway, your fuel milage honestly might just be a touch better with the 4.56 depending how you drive.

Also, with the 4.56 it leaves you more overhead if you wanted to run larger tires in the future.

Im not going over 34s but doubt ill go back to 33s. Ive had my sights set on 4.56s for a while now but Im curious what mpg loss I could expect

i gained about a third of a MPG going to 410. But your big heavy wheels and tires will lose at least twice that.
But in the end, if you have a job and make money, do MPGs really matter?
