I have a question on this subject. Ok, Is the 2009-13 trucks with the 6 speed auto much quicker short distance than the 2007-2008 trucks that had the 4 speed? Now im comparing 2 of the same trucks, just the different transmissions, like say a extended cab shortbed 4x4 with 5.3..we will say the 6l80 truck has a 3.42 rear and the 4l60 truck has the 3.73 rear being thats most common.. Im not asking this because of racing, im asking because im wanting a 2007.5-13 truck and wondering if its worth waiting to find a 2009-13 because of the 6 speed..Now, i know the 6 speed is supposed to be a tougher trans, but im wanting to know if it actually makes the truck get going from a dead stop easier and quicker being its got more gears so...

The 6 speeds first few gears are very steep. In fact the first couple gears (with 3.42) are equivalent to the 4 speed if it had 4.56 gears. Once you get to 4th in the 6speed it's close to 3rd in the 4speed with 4.10 rear end. Then of course tops gears in the 6 speed are lower rpm then a 4speed with a 3.73. It's the best of all worlds.

From what I have seen (a couple reviews) a 5.3 with the 6 speed 3.42 is almost but not quite as fast as a 6 liter, 3.73 with 4 speed.

If you look at the Ford in the following comparisons the 6 speed in that case it shaved good time off those performance numbers.

My answer would be yes. Try to get a 6 speed if you can. Performance wise and the 6 speed is a solid transmission.

THANK YOU!!! Thats exactly what i wanted to know! I currently have a 1999 that originally had the 4.8 and i swapped in a 6.0. I love the power it has when taking off. I am going to be upgrading to a 2007.5 to 2013 soon that will probably have the 5,3 and was going to miss the acceleration of the 6.0 so was wondering if the 6 speed would help the 5.3 be more peppy like the 6.0 with 4 speed. You read my mind of what i was really wanting to know! I didnt swap the 6.0 in to race it or anything. The 4.8 had a cracked head so i figured i may as well swap in a 6.0 instead of another 4.8. I will definately look for a 2009-13 now with the 6 speed.
Thanks

I don't know how much torque management a 99 had but I'm betting it's not much. The newer trucks do. So my guess is you are going to have to tune it out it you want a newer truck to "feel" anything like your 99.

Just the design of the 6 speed lends itself to hold up better, but the 4 speed has been out longer so as far as longevity goes, you can't really compare it yet.

But if I'd venture a guess I'd say that the 6 speeds will definitely out last the 4 speeds
