In the next few years I was thinking of upgrading to a Tahoe, Yukon, or another Silverado or Sierra. I have heard a lot about the 6.2 v8 motors and I see some posts about some issues people are having. Are these motors pretty good or would it be wise to steer clear from them? I do have 3 trucks in my possession right now with the Vortec 5.3s. Of course the Vortec and Ecotech engines are similar but I am just curious as to how reliable the Ecotechs are. Sure all vehicles will have some issues but I would like to try a 6.2 I hear they are beasts and the 5.3 Eco tech are very nice too but not as much power of course, but they still get the job done!!

I saw a 6.2 blow apart a piston i was like hmm that aint good. Which is why i am a little concerned
I follow this guy on YT that salvages engines. He's tearing apart a Vortec in this vid, but he says the most common coffin nail is cracked piston heads. Kinda fun to watch the pieces of raw metal fall out of the block on this one.

I suppose if you were really THAT concerned, a vehicle with any moving parts that can explode due to chance, poor maintenance, etc should be avoided. How much is a bus pass these days? ;)

i don't care about engine blowing up seen it plenty of times. But a new 6.2 V8 blowing a piston inside the block damaging a cylinder wall right after a fresh solid rebuild that seems a little fishy to me. And yeah I'd save alot of money in gas with that bus pass how bout you?

There has to be a reason as to why a 6.2 Eco tech motor is having issues. Have you seen the 6.2 page on here ? Bent rods, loss of power, on and on and on. There musta been a bad batch in the production or something I havent seen an old LM7 5.3 cause that many issues nor have i heard about a 5.3 causing alot of up roar other then the AFM sucks in some motors rather then others. You see my point? Catch my drift?

I know a guy who's 2015 or 2016 Denali (can't remember which) threw a rod at about 50K miles and had to have the engine replaced. He traded it in for the new Ram.

I unfortunately am also a current owner of a 6.2 which has the 8 speed tranny issues and now is at the dealer for the Code P0300. 21k miles and the check engine light appeared. Made the appointment and went yesterday to hear about the code and how it's a misfire in the injector. I looked it up in more detail and it doesn't look good. This 6.2 was bought with 15k miles and a range was put on the day I bought it. Very disappointed as my 2007 NNBS was traded in at 150k miles for this (so wish I kept it) and never an issue. Guess my truck is part of the bad batch.

You got me looking and he just did an L86 EcoTec3 6.2 a couple days ago

Broken valve spring, broken lifter, valve hitting the piston, bent push rod. Wonder if it was AFM failure...

On mine last month they replaced 4 injectors, 4 lifters, broken pushrod (the pushrod happened on the test drive after replace the 4 injectors first and all of this on the right side) and the VLOM.

But it started with running very rough and an error code on cylinder 4.

Oof that hurts. How many miles did you have? Was any of it covered under factory warranty?

I bought it 2/2020 and added an extended warranty before walking out. No factory warranty coverage remained since it had 46k on it. The motor issues happened with 56k on it.

And even with this, the condenser having been replaced along with the front Magneride shocks (I did the shock replacement) this is by far my favorite truck.

92k on my Yukon Denali

I had #6 lifter break. Replaced only the one under warranty
#5 injector failed
2 fuel pumps
Tensioner failed
Battery cable/ harness
Radiator
AC Condensor
HVAC fan motor

Engine wise it's been ok, but lots of other issues before 60k

New trans 15k
3/4 MRC struts replaced
New exhaust system
Many sensors replaced
2 headlight/taillights
GPS antenna
Prob more but forgetting

A lot for a freakn' $70k+ vehicle

I have a 2022 chevy 1500 trail boss LT with the L87 6.2 motor. I drive it alot, on and off road. I recently rolled over 33,000, had 5 miles on it when I bought it. I've always had the 5.3 vortec motor. The 5.3 are amazing, but I have been seriously impressed by the 6.2 both on and off road! These young punks at stop lights don't have a chance at take off or top end. Has all the power you need and then some. And surprisingly on the highway I've gotten up to 22mpg. In town less than 10mpg. The L87 is the corvette motor with different external parts. My opinion from owning mine, I would highly recommend it. Hope that helps.

14 months now, whopping 9600 miles. Reliable so far. Only trips to the dealership were for oil changes. Just got my 2nd done a couple of weeks ago.

Is yours MY21 or MY22 LTD? A lot of the bearing problems are on MY22.5-some MY24s, but mostly MY23s.

The MY21 had some bad lifter issues, but if yours does not have auto start stop then it probably is a good sign. Some were built without it (not sure about the DFM however....).

I have a '14 Sierra with the 6.2. Bought it use. I test drove it in a pretty congested area, and the seller gave me some directions on where to go to get out of the traffic. Once I got on an open road, he encouraged me to open it up a little. WOW!!!, it reminded me of the "throw you back in your seat" acceleration of the late 60's muscle cars I used to build and play around with! That guy knew how to sell that truck! It's got 125,000 miles on it now and it's never missed a beat. Regular maintenance, oil changes about every 7,500 miles, I alternate between 87 octane and 91 or 93, whichever is available, no modifications, no AFM delete. It's an amazing performer! I've noticed on this site as well as all other automotive sites that if you throw out a question asking what folks thing about a particular vehicle, motor, transmission that they all seem to immediately recall a story about someone they knew who had a problem. I'm not pointing fingers. I'm the same way. It's much easier to remember a frustrating or poor experience than it is to remember a pleasant experience or simply a "non-experience". Like having a truck for years with no real issues at all. It's what we expect, so we don't really appreciate it like we should.
I love my 6.2 and it's my 4th GMC/Chevy truck and I put over 300,000 miles on the other 3 - including a 5 cylinder Chevy Colorado, and I don't expect anything less from this truck.
I'd say go test drive one with a 6.2 and look for an opportunity to put your foot into it a little bit, and nothing else will be enough for you!!!
