Little by little im noticing my 2013 HD 6.0 crank & start up weaker & weaker. The battery is atleast a couple years old & I'm willing to bet it's time for a new one. I definitely want an AGM battery. I was thinking about picking up one of those Optima yellow or red top batteries (I forget which one I was looking at getting) but numerous people at this point have told me there's way better options out there, Optima batteries are over hyped & not as good now as they once were.. What's a good quality, dependable AGM battery that will last?? If it matters, the truck is driven daily & everyday I have a guaranteed 30 mile drive to work, then 30 miles back home.. So the truck is ran & used a good bit. It's never sitting unused for more than a day or 2 tops, if at all. Thanks in advance!

I use mine in the same manner, 70 mile round trip every day. Everstarts from walmart have been just fine for me.

Optima are way overhyped imo as well

I've been using Interstate lately, (mainly because I get a good discount,) but do have a couple of Duracell.
Batteries only last about three years in Texas, so brand isn't really a "driver."

There are less than a handful of battery manufacturers in the US anyway...

Honestly, wherever you can get a replacement easy at nowadays. Whether Walmart, Sam's Club, Costco, etc.

With that said, my last 2 batteries have been Duracells from Sam's Club since there's one about 3 miles from our house. There's 2 Walmarts roughly that same distance so if it wasn't Duracell at Sam's, it'd probably be an Everstart from Walmart.

when optima came on the scene 30 ish years ago, they rocked the industry. A battery you could mount in nearly any direction and it looks cool. That made the auto industry go nuts. Everyone was using this crazy new style battery in every build because they were the shiznit for that time period.

Today, they arnt the leader and there are specific batteries for the type of 'racing' you do.

For a normal vehicle, I'd get whats best for you. Walmart, autozone, sears, whomever is close, becuase they dont last. Thjeyre expensive, and most batteries just have a different sticker on them, but made the same, at the same plant on the same assembly line.

You want a killer AGM with ihgh specs, look up XS Batteries. They are real nice, but i think we are peaked on battery tech, just look at the EVs, its the batteries which is the problem with them for the long run.

XS is made in China along with tons of lead starter batteries as well as like 99% of the all LiFeP04 cells in the world.

Don't let these brands fool you, esp anything that seems American.

The only real American made manufacturer at this point is East Penn - and even they farm out production to Mexico, Turkey, you name it.

They are not my friend.

Your truck was not designed to charge and maintain an AGM battery. Installing one will work, it will not last as long as it could have. Use an ACDelco 48HPG or 48HGR, these are high reserve capacity batteries with a 42 month free replacement warranty from GM. Check for coupons at your local GM dealership, some will install it for free. I buy mine from O'Reilly's. The latter number replaces the former number, running both in my trucks.

Agree with everybody above. Batteries come from just a few factories and in a regular daily use there really is no difference. Just buy the cheapest with the best warrant.

My truck came with a year old Interstate when I bought the truck in 2020 and it's now showing signs of being towards the end of life. I will shop around soon, but most likely get one from either Costco or Sam's Club.

And yeah, Optima is waste of money in your use case.

Gotta agree on the Optima not being as they represent them self's! I was a huge Optime fan, yeah they were one of our sponsors at a track I worked at. So I got them at around Cost! Matter of fact I befriended the local Optima sales rep near me.
Have had yellow tops and red tops over the years in most of my vehicles and like stated they Were above and beyond better with higher CCAs than standard flooded cell batts.
With in the last seven or so years I noticed the battery performance had declined, along with the support from Optima!
The last yellow top i had in my truck I replaced with a red top only because it exceeded the five year mark (battery was still performing great), I had a rather long trip coming up towing my trailer and decided to swap it out as a preventative matter. The yellow top went to my boat and I got a new (with in a month old) red top. Fourteen months later I was developing slight battery issues.
The day before a recent camping trip I chased down a Low voltage battery issue. Optima rep was not available so I went to WM and purchased an AGM ever start, three year replacement free!
Finally contacted the rep,, got a few himms and haws from him because I didn't actually buy that battery off his truck (again he wasn't available at the time).
So I will move on!
As a note, That yellow top is still going strong as a boat motor/trolling motor battery! The fourteen month old ret top developed a case leak at the negative post, rep initially tried to blame on owner maintenance! He did refund my cost in the long run!

I'd say Northstar till they got bought out by EnerSys. So now probably Odyssey is the top dog as far as starter batts go. Need one? Of course not. Also don't need a lift kit, bolt on exhaust, new speakers or 1000 more fancy ass extra stuffs.

Optima is a Clarios brand which makes about 80% of all starter batteries for our trucks. Study the battery database to get the low down.

I might be wrong
GM cant tell me as I just called them.
My 11 says it came standard with an AGM. GM parts guy couldnt tell me with certanty that the 13 2500 had an AM from the factory. Maybe OP will Opine
The first replacement choice at the dealer is an AGM.
Napa store says AGM is strongly recommended due to electrical loads.

None of my GMT900s came with an AGM battery. A couple of years ago I was considering an AGM and came across information that said the charging system was not made for it. Can't remember where. To reinforce this notion, the ACDelco catalog does not recommend AGMs in GMT900s even though they make them.

The dealer is going to recommend them as their cars have been using AGMs for about ten years now. i reckon the employees think they all come with them. As for NAPA's selling point, it doesn't hold water when we compare ACDelco batteries, maybe their batteries are made for a higher discharge rate. Don't think I've seen more than 55 amps draw in mine.

Like I said, you can run an AGM in your truck, it's just not going to last as long. They like/need a different charging schedule. This applies to GMT900s, not the newer K2s and T1s that came with AGMs from the factory.

I had two optimas in my tahoe, I had to warranty them 7 times before they told me i couldnt get them warrantied anymore.
I though they were suppose to be the best but found out they are terrible.
Ended up putting some cheap Everstarts in it from walmart and they lasted 6 years no problem. I used my front and rear winchs several times a week so they got a workout and my alternator was loving it. I let the tahoe sit up for a few years when the old 6.0 was drinking oil like it was at a buffet. Hooked them back up and it fired up first try. So i been buying Everstarts for everything because most walmarts are open 24/7 so i can go back for warranty whenever i need to.

Up in Canada we have a major retailer called Canadian Tire. They sell their brand of Motomaster batteries. Don’t know who they’re made by but warranty is good and across Canada. AGM batteries for my truck are 300 bucks EACH!! SLA are 220 each
Not sure on other brands as I’ve never bought anywhere else other than Canadian tire for my automotive batteries. We have another retailer called Canadian Energy that I get my RV, ATV, and sled batteries from. The sleds and atv’s are AGM batteries by Motobatt.

If you just want to see what the latest tech in batteries is that is really cool, super long lasting, lighter than standard, and can even jumpstart itself, take a look at the new Lithium car battery.

For the price, I don't think most of us would normally buy this, but it's nice.

#33 ·
It would be nice. In the cold? Worthless.

The H7 equivalent is rated at 30Ah vs 80aH. LifeP04's don't 'float' like lead acids. They like to sit between 20-80%. So if you leave your headlights on you have maybe 40 min before the BMS kills the show. Without the BMS, discharging these batteries will kill them permanently. And over charging them is just as bad - we've all seen the fires. Bad BMS! Go to your room! 😩

For me, I use AGM Batteries. Never had any problems. My last rig, I replaced the factory battery with a Bosch AGM a few months after I got it. 6 years later it was still kicking when I traded it in. Did the same with my current rig a few months after I got it. Not pushing any particular battery type...just stating my experience!

To the op, why exactly do you definitely want an AGM in your vehicle if it didn't come with one stock?

#32 ·
If batteries required oil changes this thread could combine both 'what oil' and 'what battery' into one - and simultaneously implode the known universe into a soul sucking event not seen since the big bang. 🙈

An AGM has a chemistry that requires it to be 'full' at 13v but also will allow a much deeper discharge well below 12v. Assuming the ECM knows this is silly. It's a much more versatile battery and can sit 'dead' for years and be revived. My last AGM would start my truck at 10v no prob.

while we are at it, can someone tell me which oil to use??? :D
(not a dis on the OP) Just opinion based questions get a LOT of opinion based answers....

oh, what tire is the best?? :D
