My question is about capacities.

2013 Sierra Regular Cab Standard Box 4.8L 3.23 rear axle ratio

4,700 # max tow capacity
1,940 # truck load capacity
3,750 # real axle capacity

So can I put 1,200 in the bed, plop my 200 pounds in the seat, and have 540 pounds let for tongue weight and luggage, and STILL tow 4700 pounds?

Where does 3750# rear axle capacity figure into all this?

Thanks! Jim / AmericanToolbox.com

You will most certainly be over the gcvwr, which is not a good thing.

The trailer tongue weight is part of the payload. You also never want to get right up to your max rating since you will be very close to the limit if you add anything, like fill your gas tank or have an extra person in the truck. You always want a 15-20% safety margin.

I recently drove 2400 miles with a 1900 pound trailer loaded with about 2500 pounds of crap.

Then in the truck was me, my truck tool box, and the tongue weight, which might have been 600# or so total.

Truck drove like it was nearly empty, when the tow mode is engaged.

What I wanted to be clear was the bed capacity.

I might want to carry 1200 pounds of 2" flagstone in the bed and pull another 4,000.

Is this gonna kill my mileage? I was not displeased with the mpg driving the 2400 miles.

Well yeah the truck can pull it. These trucks can pull pretty much anything. But doing so safely and legally is another thing.

Guy in Virginia maybe wants this special Arizona 2" flagstone. And I might be passing right by both places.

32 sq ft is 800 pounds. I figure I can bring 48 sq ft in the bed on a pallet, and trailer another 96 sq ft.

Is it going to bash my mpg?

Pictured is the 32 sq ft. It weighed about 800 pounds.

Where did you get the info on the under 5k tow capacity for that model? I've towed full size cars on heavy uhaul auto transport trailers easily. With the bed to capacity I believe you can do at least 5000 lbs between trailer and what's in it. I have to follow this thread that's the same truck I have. Would like to know what I shouldn't be pulling.

Ok. I spaced on the 3.23. Sorry about that. That's pretty crazy that the 6 pulls more than your truck. What's the point of the gears?

how did you come up with 1940 pounds capacity in a 1/2 ton truck?
That information is in the 2013 GMC Sierra glossy brochure. Page 39, under "Maximum Payload".

Hey, these guys saw my clean fingernails and figured I was some kind of "Gentleman Plumber". Didn't ask specifics. Didn't even tell me they factory-ordered the truck I asked about when I showed them my desired specs and options.

Sucks I cannot pull a little Subaru Impreza on a trailer.

Does your truck have the 4L60E transmission? And it pulls 9000# ?

I have the 4 speed auto with 3.42 gears. Nowhere near 9000. Just pulled the book and it said the max trailer 6000 gcwr is 11000. Truck is 2900, that leaves 2100 for everything else. But that is for mine and if that is how it even works. I went straight to the page you showed for that info but didn't get this next info from the book. I have my build sheet gvwr is 6400. Now minus the truck 2900, no trailer 3500 in the bed?????

2012 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE 4.8L V8 4x4 3.42 rear
Standard cab standard box
:D I know the truck! Ours would seem nearly identical. The 4x4 stands fractionally taller.

From my 2013 glossy brochure:
4wd payload for the 2013 is 1714 pounds.

From my 2013 manual:
1500 Series 4WD Regular Cab Standard Box 4.8L V8 3.42
max trailer weight = 2 722 kg (6,000 lbs)
GCWR = 4 990 kg (11,000 lbs)
