different size tires on the front axle?

Ideally you want all 4 tires to be the same. However, if your going to run a different tire, definitely put it on the front. Same with using the spare if you have a different than factory size tire. So say you run 33" tires, and you get a flat on one of the rears. Take one of the matching 33s off the front and move that to the rear and then run the spare up front.

Just be sure to NOT use 4wd, or auto 4wd. The front axle disengages so you won't hurt anything up front. You will hurt the diff in the rear though with mis matched tires.

If you just asking if you can run say a toyo in the rear and a Cooper up front, then as long as they are the same size, yes, that's no issue. Because even with the slightly different sizes between manufacturers, even given the same sidewall size, any time your using 4wd, the traction should be low enough that it won't matter if the front and rear are spinning at slightly different speeds.
