Was going to replace the right rear axle bearing on the 2013 Silverado 1500 work truck I just purchased a couple months ago and when I opened up the differential discovered the planetary and satellite gears were all chipped up. So... after a great deal of thinking about G80 carriers and other axle options, I ended up to purchasing an Eaton TrueTrac carrier and rebuild kit from Summit Racing.
I've watched numerous videos regarding TrueTrac installs and I'm fairly mechanical, but I certainly don't wrench for a living either. I've spoken with two local rear end mechanics and they recommend pulling the pinion and replacing the bearings while the back end is all opened up. The long and short of this is I'm not certain if I want to take on this kind of responsibility myself and try to self install or just pony up the money and have a professional do the work. I'm supplying all the parts and the installers will be providing labor and knowledge. First independent guy was $800, second independent guy was $578 plus tax and my local Chevrolet dealership said they would do it for $590 plus incidentals, plus tax.
Looking for some insight on how to proceed and to see if these prices are inline the overall project.
