Ever Overblown a Simple Problem?

Maybe you've heard a strange noise or felt a strange clunk and you chase ghosts only to find out that it's nothing, what are your stories?
Most recently I'd been hearing a weird rattle coming from my driverside rear tire while changing gears and making left turns.
I dug into the problem for a few weeks and though maybe a wheel weight had come loose and was rattling around. No dice.
Finally I stood next to my truck and shook the bajesus out of it to try and reproduce the noise and i did i promptly looked down and notice that one of the factory exhaust hanger welds had broken and all i needed to do is tac it back on
simple fix for weeks of stress.

You're one of the lucky ones. Most chase the ghosts and replace parts until it goes away!

Not quite the same, but when I got my windows tinted they tint was bubbled bad. They told me not to roll my windows down for 3 days. Well I was furious over all the bubbles turns out 3 days later they were all gone. They hadn't told me or I didn't hear that the tint would stay bubbled until it dried.

I am horrible about that, we had a rattle we simply couldnt find, took the truck to the shop, they spent an hour under it hanging from everything they could and no dice in finding the issue.

I have to say it was the lovely Mrs. Bull who found the issue, while standing next to the truck one day she grabbed ahold of the silver bar we have moutned to the top of the truck bed to tie things down to, and the freaking bar was loose and would rattle whenever we hit a bump.....

Had a similar issue. Turned out one of my muffler hangers was a little long on the end, and had wiggled close to the frame and would vibrate\tap against the frame at certain frequencies. I turned it away slightly and put a rubber ball on the end of it (knob from an old machine that fit perfectly), hasn't made a sound since. But I was going nuts for 3-4 days trying to figure out where the @#%^ that rattle was coming from.

Same here. Buddy had a rattle in his engine bay after doing an edelbrock performer intake. Begged him for weeks to do something about it, lol.

Great topic, glad you were able to find & correct your issue before taking drastic steps. I ended up selling my 2009 Silverado at 40,000 miles due to what thought was a vibration (annoyance) between 1,200-1,800 RPM. It drove me bonkers while trying to fix it. I removed driveshafts, u-joints, wheels, rotors, shocks, heat shields, and let my buddies drive while I rode in the different seat locations trying to pinpoint it. Had my 2013 Silverado for less than 4 months when the same ($^*$^(ing vibration / noise showed up! I nearly flipped out but got lucky that I found the cause before ending up in a straightjacket. It was my MBRP muffler, something had let go internally and was vibrating during the narrow RPM range. MBRP was straight up and sent me a replacement muffler after verifying my warranty registration. Morale of the story, I did not need to kick my '09 to the curb = so much for patience.

I love the title to this thread. I'm a diagnosed Obsessive Compulsive and professional engineer. Blowing little details out of proportion is my life. Luckily it pays well.

Haven't had any rattles I haven't been able to diagnose yet. I've got the tranny dipstick thumping away right now, but it's not a big deal and the reason is known. Lord help me when a tie-rod/bearing/bushing/assorted suspension piece starts going.

I drive a WT ext cab. And since I've owned the truck (Oct '12) there has been an off and on noise coming from just behind me on the passenger side. Like something was left in the door pocket on the ext door. The window in that door doesn't go up and down on work trucks, the handle/lever is secure. Nothing in the door pocket.
Nothing in my door to cause the noise etc, pulled the door panel to be sure.
One day when cleaning I noticed that the ext door on the drivers side (the area of the noise) wasn't shut all the way. It appeared shut but you could grab the door and it had some play in it, it was latched but not shut completely.
I opened it and slammed it, no more play…….. no more noise.

Yep...same part # and manufacturer (clarification they were two separate systems I did not take the old one off the '09 and onto the '13). Probably why my warranty inquiry was handled so fast.

I had a rattle in my 02 that sounded like it was coming from the passenger door or pass kick panel. I chased it for weeks! Door panel off multiple times, glove box apart, kick panel off, insulating harnesses, tie wrapping securing everything.....drove me nuts as I still had the rattle.

Turns out my Injen cold air intake was the culprit. A rubber mount grommet had come out. Yes the rattle was all the way up front but the way the sound traveled you would swear it was in / at the door.

Amazing how a rattle / vibration / sound can be so deceiving...very cool that you found the culprit.

I know a guy who will just let stuff go until it becomes either a huge issue or it is so obvious where it is. Example, he had a leak that was more than a few drips. It was leaving a trail in the parking lot for a day or two and where ever he stopped was a big puddle. So he just let it go until the trans started acting up. Then he looked for the leak. It ended up being his trans cooler line.

A few vehicles ago I had a F*rd F-150. Started hearing a clinking noise coming from the rear of the truck going over bumps or potholes. I was guaranteed to hear it several times a day because there was a big bump right in front of my apartment so I had no choice but I go over it. Anyway I began hating that truck because of that clunk. Finally found the culprit. The stupid spare tire somehow became a little loose and was banging around under the bed. Tightened it up and was so relieved that the clunking stopped!

Been there done that.......bought a 05 silverado in march middle of april got 4 new coopers for it the noticed a vibration around 45 so had tires balanced again and found one that had lots of weight on it so the tire company (discount tire) replaced it was still there so they sent me to get them road forced was still there so they replaced 2 more had them put on still there in between a replaced both front wheel bearings left calipier 4 shocks rear brake drums both ujoints on drive shaft. ooooo i new wheel then replaced all 4 wheels with new powered coated rims......Discount tire when way above service they told me that they would give me there best tire (michelins) had them mounted and road forced found 2 of them had high road force they replaced them 2 and the problem is still there truck ride beautiful once you get over 50 so ya lots of part put on here for nothing..........lol

Wasn't my tail chasing exercise, but the other guys in the shop. We have a few F*rd CV's left on the fleet that we can't retire yet. One in particular kept getting shopped for crappy a/c. The air flow just sucked real bad.

One of the other techs, over time, replaced NEARLY all of the a/c system including all of the ducting in the dash. It still kept getting shopped.

This time it was my turn. I pulled the blower motor to see if there was something like paper or whatever damming up the air flow when I saw the evaporator that was about 75% clogged with something. I pulled the airbox, which is only slightly easier to do than the ducting behind the dash and found the evaporator clogged with, what I could only guess, was old dog hair.

My guess is the CV was a Highway Patrol K-9 car. We got it at 40k miles on it, which is very low for a cop car. We usually got those around 100k. It probably sat on the side of the road most of the day, a/c blasting, with SGT Bowser shedding in the back.

Put a new evaporator in it and now you can freeze to death in there when it's 110 degrees outside.

I worked in prison before I retired. We had this guy who was the computer tech, so he went everywhere in the jail. He had this bad habit of eating other people's food. Tried a lot of set-ups to get him to stop, like slicing up rubber hose that looked like black olives and putting them on pizza. Filling donuts with mint shaving cream and a few even nastier things.
Nothing worked. Once they even tied a dead raccoon to his bumper and called the local P.D and told them this guy was dragging a dog behind his pick-up. As it got worse, he would not stop stealing food. The guys took the portable welding truck to the parking lot and tack welded three links pull chain from chain fall on is drive shaft.The clink noise it made drove him crazy for months. Only heard it starting and stopping.I retired in 2008 and they tell me he is still stealing food.

ROFLMAO....Some people never change.

'09 Chevy. Ticking noise. The faster I went, the faster it ticked until road noise or the sound of pushing air would over come the noise. Could hear it real good from inside the cab, but when I stepped out of the truck and popped the hood, it didn't seem like I could hear it. Checked on the advice I give lots of people with older trucks...check the exhaust manifold heat shield; they are notorious for cracking and rattling...wasn't it. Had it in for an oil change and asked the service adviser about it; I told him it sounded like a lifter knocking. Don't remember exactly what he said it could be, but it sounded more expensive than I wanted to deal with. Took it home, but on the way I noticed my neighbor Kasey standing in front of his house. He gave a listen from the driver's side; nothing. He popped the hood; nothing. Closed the hood and stepped to the passenger's side and told me to give 'er just a little bit of gas as he leaned over by the tire, popped back up and said to turn it off. He crawled under the truck on a hunch (I'm guessing) and said, "Exhaust collector".

Went to my dealership, brought the $12 piece to my favorite muffler shop and for another $20 (and 1/4 of my Wheel Spacers sticky) I was rolling in silence.
