This question is geared more towards my Duramax... I just put a Magnaflow catback on the truck and it's not loud at all, just a nice little rumble at idle and it really barks at wide open throttle more than anything. What I am curious about, is does anyone know if they would fail me for having the exhaust dumped under the truck just after the muffler with a turndown? It doesn't make the truck any louder, I just like the look of no pipe sticking out behind the rear tire. I can always swap the rear section back and fourth for inspection if I have to, just prefer to leave it this way if I can.

Muffler and Exhaust System. Accelerate motor to test for prevention of unnecessary noise and emission of any unreasonable amount of smoke. The exhaust system, exhaust manifold(s), exhaust pipe(s), muffler(s), and tailpipe(s), if designed to be so equipped, shall be tight and free of leaks. System components shall be securely fastened with fasteners in place and undamaged. All motor vehicle exhaust systems shall discharge the exhaust beyond operator, passenger, and/or trunk compartment. Unnecessary noise is herein defined as any noise which is louder than that emitted by the vehicle when equipped with the original manufacturer's equipment. A gas or diesel vehicle will be rejected if, at normal operating temperature, when at idle or any constant speed, visible black or blue exhaust emissions are evident.

It depends on where you go. I live in MA and I passed with a cracked side mirror for three years, and it was the same guy at the same shop. But I've heard of some places, dealers especially that will white glove and not let anything by.

My guess as a resident Masshole, you'll be fine. You have a muffler of some sort, it exhausts past the operator/passenger cab area, and doesn't make it any louder, and being a diesel, it's expected to be louder.

yeah it literally dumps right before the rear axle and it's not loud at all. Guess I'll give it a shot. Worst case, Ill just have to put the rear section back on and go back. It doesn't trip any lights or anything and it's not loud unless I stand on it, so...

I can't wait to see what MASS DOT thinks of my Silverado when I finish with that project lol I think I may have to register that truck in Florida at my buddies address haha

Mass Dot sucks...but I'm sure you've seen just as many trucks here in MA that look like they can't be legal without having someone on the inside for inspections, but I still see them for sure. There are some laws, but a lot are not really enforced. if you're unsure of a particular mod, post the idea here and we'll see if we can find an accompanying law that says if you're good to go or not...
