How often to change fully synthetic engine oil?

I bought my 2013 Silverado 2500 gasser this passed summer & one of the first things I did was get the oil changed with mobile1 full synthetic. It's been about 4,700 miles since then now. At what interval should I change the engine oil with it being fully synthetic? I know that the oil filter is a limiting factor... What's a good oil filter to use?? I'm going to start doing the oil changes myself. Thanks!

Oil is cheap. Engine rebuilds ain't. I can't be screwing around with oil analysis. That's the only true way to know.

Everybody is claiming all of this high mileage intervals and extended life oil and maintenence free cars, and all of this other horse manure they're spouting.

Nobody ever said F all about extended life oil filters, did they?

If modern oils perform better, then that means that they clean the engine better. And that means that modern oil is carrying more junk in it. Which means the filter is working harder, thereby collecting more trash.

Logic dictates that, if anything, you should change these super oils more frequently. Or at least, change your filter more often.

Personally, I don't over think it. 3k miles, it gets changed. And it looks plenty dirty every time.

I've seen inside numerous engines where the vehicle manufacturer and the oil jug both say you can go for this crazy extended interval, and the lie detector determined that both the vehicle manufacturer and the oil company are excessively full of S.

Dealership service history states this vehicle has come to this shop every X miles and gotten the recommended service religiously. The owner of the vehicle has carefully followed OEM and oil brand recommendations. The engineers have sworn that you can go this many miles, no problem.

Well if they're so smart, then why is this top end completely caked in sludge? Why is that crank turning blue gold and purple with heat caused by plugged oil passages caused by sludge created by extended intervals?

I'm not convinced by the slick marketing, but I am convinced by what I've seen inside plenty of engines.

Suit yourself. Carefully follow the owner's manual. Listen to Pennzoil or Mobil or pick your poison telling you that it's safe to go 5, 6, 8, 10k miles or whatever. I'm perfectly happy to charge you money to fix it.

>>The reader will note that my normal monotone has changed to one of bitterness and sarcasm. It angers me to see my customers getting screwed by following poor advice given by the OEM in order to boost sales.

Do you think things are any different in the medical pharmaceutical-agricultural industrial complexes?

That being said, I use only the recommended 0-W20, and either a Baldwin, Wix or OEM filter every 5000 miles.
I have 185K now, and Blackstone Labs says the motor is healthy.

i have a 2016 2500hd with the 6.0. go to bob is the oil guy forum and you'll learn more than you ever wanted to know. bottom line you are definitely safe going by the OLM and can usually get away with using the same filter for 2 oil changes.

personally i cant see bothering to crawl under the truck and not swap the filter, so i change them both on the first convenient day when the OLM gets below 10%. delco filter and the cheapest dexos 5w-30 full syn i can find, used to be supertech but lately has been quaker state high mileage.

You should do an oil analysis to determine YOUR OCI. In a mechanically sound LS engine, using good oil and filter, 7500 miles is well within the range.

If you have fuel dilution or coolant in the oil, the OCI should be much less.

AC Delco PF63 or K&N1007

Mobil 5w40 FS or M1 0w40 FS are great oils, NApa Synthetic has prven to me to be a great oil, verfified by analysis.

I change my oil every 5,000 miles even though most of them say they can go longer. Intervals of 5,000 miles is super easy to keep track of on the odometer without having to write it down on a windshield sticker or something and oil/filters are cheap. Rebuilding a motor is NOT cheap.

Personally, I prefer Penzoil Ultra Platinum and Fram Ultra Synthetic filters just because that's usually what's easily available in my part of the world. In reality, most any reasonable quality oil and filter will do just fine. I just ordered a Purolator Boss filter for my 8.1 because I couldn't easily find a Fram Ultra Synthetic filter. I just avoid the super cheap filters like Fram Extra Guard and other similar filters that cost about the same as a small coffee from McD's. I'll spend an additional $5 every oil change to get a better quality oil filter with better filtering properties any day of the week!

"Full synthetic" is like "whole grain bread." These guys are just writing things on labels that consumers think is good so they buy it.

I've blended 4-5 different same weight oils a few times - including Amsoil with that cheap ass blue bottle from Wally World. My engine didn't care.

At the very least, look the oil up on PQIA's site to see how it tested, what's in it, etc.

some people come here for help. Not to get asinine misinformation from a keyboard warrior who uses statements "you are definitely okay to only change your oil filter every other oil change."

You can not make that claim based from fact. So why make it?

If you want to go all ad hominem, you will lose.
To be fair, he said:

"can usually get away with using same filter"..........not that "you are definitely okay to change your filter every other."

:)

yeah thats fair and I read that too. But it is what he was suggesting, using the context of that rest of that post. We can all agree its a valid discussion amongst people who know their answers and own best practices. To suggest that to someone who is obviously not there themselves yet was not a wise move IMO, referring to the OP and future readers.

The OP originally just asked for an oil change recommendation….that’s a pretty simply question.
The it turned into a shit.show as people have to criticize, flame, judge, admonish others, and then the name calling starts.
So many threads have had the same issues. How silly.
Three or four well written responses would have answered the OP’s question. What ever happened to HELP rather than SLAM on a forum???

have you by chance heard of "the internet?"

Thanks for all the responses. Much appreciated. A question regarding oil may seem dumb to most, especially on here. I knew what the general recommendations were for oil change intervals.. However, since this is a forum specifically for GM trucks & alot of people on here have the same truck & engine as me & are also very knowledgeable about these trucks in particular, I just wanted to hear what others preferred & did with there trucks🤷‍♂️
