Just bought my 13 a week ago and in about another week it will already be nearing the 1000 mile mark. I think thats plenty for it to be broken in isnt it? Just wondering how you guys have broke in your trucks. I want to run synthetic in it here on out or Should I wait on the synthetic a few more thousand miles? Whats your guys imput on this? Thanks!!

Its a myth you can't use Synthetic oil in new engines. Synthetic oil is perfectly safe for use in both new and high-mileage engines.

Corvettes have come factory filled with Synthetic Oil since 1991. My 2009 CTS came factory filled with synthetic oil as did all Cadillacs + Synthetic oil was required to maintain warranty. I have not used one drop of oil in my car and I switched it to AMSOIL before 5,000 miles.

John Im not sure if Im going to change over tranny and axle oil just yet. Theres a guy in town who Im guessing is an Amsoil dealer that I need to hunt down lol. He drives a sierra thats wrapped with Amsoil on it. Ive heard pretty good things about Amsoil on here and around town and I was wanting to run it in my new truck. Z15, can you tell me more about what I should run, like what weight and I seen something on here about an Amsoil oil filter thats has the same materiels in it as what they use in airplanes or something a few weeks ago. What are the benefits of running synthetic?

Check your Pm's

As for benefits of Synthetic Oil:

Its last longer
has better wear protection
easy cold weather starts
better high temp protection
Synthetics are engineered, not refined from crude oil, they excel in wear protection, extreme high- and low-temperature performance, foam control, viscosity retention, rust and corrosion protection, volatility and fuel economy.

Synthetic oil is chemically engineered for a certain molecular composition with a tailored and uniform structure. Such fine-tuned control over the final molecular composition of synthetic oils is the key to their superior performance properties. Designing molecular structures in a planned and orderly fashion results in molecules, and end-products, that are far more stable than their refined petroleum counterparts.

why send the answer in a pm. for everyone that has Dexos on there oil cap you have to run 5w30 semi or full synthetic. no other weight. GM dexos is semi synthetic. Just run full synthetic.

The 13 has synthetic in the engine trans and rear axle from the factory, use only dexos approved engine oil in the engine, DEX6 in the trans or say goodbye to your warranty should you have a problem. As far as using the oil life monitor I would speak to your dealer about this subject, I drive a lot of highway miles with little stop and starts and the OLM system was telling me I could go 10,000 miles between changes. I never used more than 70 percent of my oils life on my 09 and I will be on track to do the same on my new truck.

Ya I opened the hood for the first time yesterday afternoon and notice the different oil filler cap. Guess Ill be running Mobil 1 5w30 synthetic with a Wix filter. I had no clue about all the fluids in it already being synthetic. Thanks I appreciate it!

This statement is completely false!

Federal law prohibits GM from requiring you to use a dexos licensed product to maintain warranty. In the owner's manual it specifically states that a "dexos licensed or equivalent" product should be used. In fact GM even allows the use of ILSAC GF-4 or ILSAC GF-5 products in most vehicles if a dexos or dexos equivalent product is not readily available. Corvettes and certain other vehicles which previously required a GM 4718M type oil will require a 4718M type oil or a dexos/dexos equivalent oil.

You cannot be forced to purchase a specific branded item or part, to keep your warranty intact, such as dexos. They cannot force you to buy something branded by them (GM) that helps them make money.

YES, dexos IS a brand, trademarked and licensed by GM. You cannot use it unless you pay them a fee.

Yes, you can buy dexos branded oils wherever you want BUT GM is getting money no matter what company you buy it from (license fee + percentage of every gallon sold). It's their brand on the container and being intimidated or coerced into buying a GM branded product is totally against the Fair Trade Act (Magnuson-Moss). That is an infringement on free trade.

All you need is to have is oil you use meet their requirements, that's it, end of story. If they (the dealer) tell you differently, it could be construed as against the law and unethical of them to tell you that.

GM is "not recommending" any oils that won't pay them to have their brand on the container. There is nothing wrong with using AMSOIL, it meets or exceeds the specs. But they will not pay GM a large amount of money to use their brand logo on the container, can't blame them for that.

I switched to Amsoil XL engine oil at 1,000 miles on my truck, and then switched all of the other fluids (axles, tranny, transfer case) at about 10,000 miles.

At 40k now:
I use no engine oil
I was surprised when I changed the differentials and transfer case, at how much break in metal was on the magnets.

I highly recomend Amsoil, and also recommend an early change of all fluids. No need to have all of those metals in there.

All new gm and chevy trucks come with 5w-30 full synthetic oil from the factory. On the label of the oil you buy it MUST SAY DEXOS COMPLIANT to keep your warrny. Personally I run Mobil one 5w-30 full synthetic and acdelco p48 filter. Best price is Walmart. You need six qt of oil I buy the 5qt jug plus one individual qt and filter. It cost me like $38 and change at the store. I change mine every 5k. Good luck. Call dealer and ask what they suggest for change oil on the break in oil.

No, they don't. They come with an approved Dexos oil, likely AC Delco brand oil. This oil is a semi-syn, but not a full syn.

Assuming we are talking about the WARRANTY, then no. This is again false and misleading information. Please read the post earlier in this section from Mike (member Z15). You will NOT void your warrantry by using a non-Dexos oil.

Please people...study your facts. We've been over this a million times.

^^ Guys like Levi, and other white truck owners are VERY intelligent!

Levi, I've studied it to death. Whether you run Amsoil or not is up to you. But I strongly suggest a change, and for you to go to a full synthetic. I did a lot of research before switching from Mobil 1 to Amsoil. Both are great oils. So is Valvoline SynPower. I'd recommend any of them. Of these, only M1 is "dexos approved". All of them meet of exceed the spec for dexos. Honestly, after all the hype and mis information, if all things are equal, I will be inclined to support a non-dexos vendor.

Thank you Eric! And I agree haha. I just got back from OReillys and picked up some Mobil 1 full synthetic along with my Wix oil filter. Ive always ran Valvaline and I was looking at ths Synpower but I went ahead and got the M1. Ive heard nothing but good things from all three brands. Its just more convenient for me to go to the parts store and pick up oil than either ordering it or getting ahold of a local salesman and having to wait on it. You know what I mean, But I greatly appreciate all the help and info everybody. Thank you!

What about running regular oil with a quart of lucas additive?

How would GM know if you were running Dexos approved oil or something else? If your engine threw a rod and you had it towed in, do they have a way to tell that it is Valvoline Synthetic and not Mobile 1 Synthetic or some other approved oil?
