They would be as good as bricks! They might be bricked! There's a reason so many charging stations are in hotel parking lots. It takes a Tesla two days to cross the Eisenhower tunnel. Arrive late and charge over night. Cross the pass and charge it up again overnight at a hotel to get the range up. A big truck might get a little further. The only way it's going to work is to put a battery in the trailer and put alternators/generators on each wheel! Or put a diesel genset in the trailer to keep the batteries charged up. Needlessly complex.

I'm all for diesel-electric or turbine-electric drive like our locomotives and WW2 era destroyer escorts and Fleet Boats for cross country vehicles.

How long would the battery last towing 20,000 pounds, over the Eisenhower Pass? Its range is 400 miles presumably with just the driver.

These scenarios are obviously not ideal for EV vehicles. The limitations of battery technology and lack of a gasoline or diesel backup or kicker engine will deter many consumers from the EV line of Silverados and other EV trucks. A 4BT Cummins or modern medium duty diesel engine rigged to charge and maintain the Silverado's batteries on demand would be a very exciting option.

Hybrids are the best of both worlds. It's not popular because it's not as profitable to produce. On the petroleum side, it's being seen as trying to be green etc. On the green energy side, it's being seen as half hearted and not fully commited.

For the consumer it's the most sensible technology you can have. I praise Ford for producing the Maverick and for choosing a hybrid engine for their base truck. Under $20k for a hybrid compact crew cab pick up truck that gets 40MPG. No other manufacture comes close. Not domestic or import. These are the kind of vehicle every company should be building. Instead we have the choice between a truck that gets 10mpg or an electric one that costs $100k and weights 9000 pounds.

I gotta say; if I owned one of these EV trucks, the first thing I'd do is mount a small, quiet, gas powered generator in the back, and have it professionally (and safely) wired in. I'd create my own 'hybrid'. Otherwise, IMO the world is not quite ready for EV.... but it's gonna happen... we just need better batteries and more charging stations.
