Check your flex plate for cracks and loose torque convertor bolts before pulling the engine.

If it would result in a replacement engine, why not just run it until it blows up? It would need the same amount of work done either way, and who knows, it might last quite some time just making a bit of a squeak.

Ever try and remove the convertor bolts when the engine is locked up?

That's interesting, that's exactly what my dad said he thought it was (bad cam or lifter). He's usually pretty good about these things. Do you feel pretty confident about the sound being a match?

That is a possibility that should be explored too.
