Hey all, I've seen a few guys do this to their trucks, and thought I'd jump on the band wagon. My truck has the Z71 appearance package which has the grill mesh chrome instead of black. My truck is silver, and I'm just not into the chrome. So here's a how to for those who are curious. I'm using bulldog adhesion promoter and black krylon fusion spray paint. You can use plasti dip I'm sure, but I wanted something a little more permanent.
Remove the grill from truck. You don't have to do this, but I'm picky, and thought it would be better to be able to have painting access to both sides of grille.
Thoroughly wash grill. I used dawn dish soap, and used my fingers to wash out the holes. Then set it in the sun and let it dry. I used my blow gun to speed up the process.
Next is the fun part. The taping. I'm using 3M automotive tape. Just what I had around, you can use whatever you like. Get it right up to the chrome. I used an old debit card to push it down.
Bottom row done, now to the top. It's a pain, but stick through it!
Now I figure out I'm all out of masking paper...wonderful!! So I taped the whole thing. Oh well, it served the purpose.
I'm still working on this so more pics to come. I just sprayed first coat of adhesion promoter. Now Krylon Fusion is said to have adhesion promoter already in it, but more is always better than less. Might be over kill doing this but that's okay. Spray the adhesion promoter (getting tired of typing that) lightly. Just most it on, it's like water, it will run very easy. I misted in one direction (left to right at an angle) then went the other way. I'm doing this to try to get coverage on all areas. Let dry 3-5 mins, then go back and do it again. Two coats is good. (No pics for this, it's clear and you can't see it. Oh and note, this stuff has a potent smell, so use in ventilated area!
Be back in a min!
