Painting grill mesh how to

Hey all, I've seen a few guys do this to their trucks, and thought I'd jump on the band wagon. My truck has the Z71 appearance package which has the grill mesh chrome instead of black. My truck is silver, and I'm just not into the chrome. So here's a how to for those who are curious. I'm using bulldog adhesion promoter and black krylon fusion spray paint. You can use plasti dip I'm sure, but I wanted something a little more permanent.

Remove the grill from truck. You don't have to do this, but I'm picky, and thought it would be better to be able to have painting access to both sides of grille.

Thoroughly wash grill. I used dawn dish soap, and used my fingers to wash out the holes. Then set it in the sun and let it dry. I used my blow gun to speed up the process.

Next is the fun part. The taping. I'm using 3M automotive tape. Just what I had around, you can use whatever you like. Get it right up to the chrome. I used an old debit card to push it down.

Bottom row done, now to the top. It's a pain, but stick through it!

Now I figure out I'm all out of masking paper...wonderful!! So I taped the whole thing. Oh well, it served the purpose.

I'm still working on this so more pics to come. I just sprayed first coat of adhesion promoter. Now Krylon Fusion is said to have adhesion promoter already in it, but more is always better than less. Might be over kill doing this but that's okay. Spray the adhesion promoter (getting tired of typing that) lightly. Just most it on, it's like water, it will run very easy. I misted in one direction (left to right at an angle) then went the other way. I'm doing this to try to get coverage on all areas. Let dry 3-5 mins, then go back and do it again. Two coats is good. (No pics for this, it's clear and you can't see it. Oh and note, this stuff has a potent smell, so use in ventilated area!

Be back in a min!

Okay here's first coat. Looks heavy but it's not, I pretty much walked circles around it lightly spraying the paint on. Looks are deceiving in low light. Walk it outside in the sun to see your coverage. I'm thinking this will need 3-4 light coats to get full coverage.

Thanks, haha go for it. Chopped it off an old s10 that came into the shop as a total. Welded in bracing, and lag bolted it up.

And finished! Another thing I like about the krylon, it dries fast! Here are before and after pics

My Grill on my z71 appearance package has chrome trim or lip around the outside. Does or did yours have the chrome trim. I cant tell from the pics. If so did you paint that too or leave it? I am painting mine myself and trying to get an idea of what it will look like. Thanks for the write up.
