i try to shift into drive but the lever just moves freely. never had any problems with the tranny or anything severe with this truck. i have a 2009 Sierra 5.3 6 speed rwd. i tried looking for similar threads but couldn’t find much. i’d really appreciate it if someone could give their thoughts on what it could be. thanks.

Id guess the linkage at the trans has come undone.

or the cable broke, or the housing broke (it sometimes happens at the center joint).

My guess is that the OP has NOT made any effort to look closely under the hot damn truck to determine any
possible cause....

Unfortunately for some locating the oil dip stick is a no go.
