This upcoming Saturday I should be purchasing a 2003 GMC Sierra. I haven't seen it in person yet, but so far it seems to check out well. Until I tried to view the Carfax and it came up as a 2003 Chevy Silverado.

A few other VIN decoding websites later, and I got a few more 03 Silverados, an 03 Tahoe, and a few no results. Why is this happening? Is it possible it's stolen or salvaged and been swapped? The dealer didn't know why, and said they would look into it.It's not a dealer I've ever heard of and it seems like it's just a small used car lot. I don't think it's possible for them to get mixed up online being similar vehicles, but am I missing something?

Everything about that Silverado is identical to the Sierra. Other than it being a Silverado, of course.

The truck is 40 minutes away, is it worth it to take the drive and physically check the VINs or justchalk it up as a loss?

If you wanted a GMC sierra then this is not the one. I ran vin came back 03 silverado 2dr 4.8 4x4. Not something I'd waste my time on. Keep looking the correct truck is out there.

i just recently bought my 2000 silverado 4x4 ext cab from a guy and i checked the vin number online at a couple different places and it says that the truck is a 2wd regular cab. idk how that happens but maybe your in the same boat as me

If you do go to look at it you might want to make a call to the BMV to verify the vin/title. Sounds a little fishy.

It's likely one of two things; someone wanted a GMC so they swapped the front clip(most likely after an accident), or it really is a GMC that's stolen and was vin swapped with a wrecked Chevy. Either way, I wouldn't touch it.

I don't believe that truck would have come from the factory with a chrome grille. It would have been the matte black one. Most likely a swap at some point.

Comes up as a GMC for me on my magical site. But then again I imputed just the last 8 of the vin, it is totally possible someone might have made some mistakes in the vin and that is what's throwing everyone else's search off.

Yes the front ends are extremely different in 03... a gmc sierra will look like my truck in the front end. a silverado will be more boxy and have slanted headlights. Also the steeringwheel usually will say gmc or have a bowtie...
