Stainless or Aluminum

Looking at getting my exhaust done from the cat back to split off into two tips with one going out on an angle on each side of the truck.
I was quoted 850 plus tax for stainless steel and he said it would last 7-8 years.

I'm curious if the aluminum would sound different, and if I should just go with that to save some cash? I realize that it will only last about half of that of stainless steel, but 850 plus tax for just some added noise...Doesn't seem worth it.

Why the heck would the material change the sound of the exhaust? And it's aluminized steel, same thing your truck comes with from the factory. Get stainless.

This is why I asked. I don't know if the different type of metal would make it sound different or not.

I would assume that the aluminized steel would be around 400-500

850 seems kinda high even for stainless. Pretty sure you can get stainless cat back kits for less than that depending on brand.

I'd go that route of that's what everyone wants to charge in your area. They are pretty easy to install since it's straight forward.

I also don't know where he got that stainless will last 7-8 years since my 95 had the stock exhaust on it still and so did my 01 and those were just aluminized steel. They really didn't even have much surface rust on them.

So if the stock steel can last over 20 years through all those Pennsylvania winters than stainless should last much much longer.

That is kind of what I was thinking. 7-8 years for a new exhaust system seems pretty rinky dink. Maybe 40 years ago an exhaust would rot out after 7-8 years, but most newer vehicles will and should go well over a decade and 200,000 miles without rust through on exhaust even in the rust belt. Sure, you could have a small leak at a weld or joint before then, but not a total failure.

Do you guys think it would be best for me to buy an exhaust kit online and install it myself?

I assume it would be fairly easy, just sawzall the old exhaust off, get a coupler to match the old tube to the new exhaust and hook up the new exhaust to the old brackets that are on the truck?

I'm looking at getting a dual tip one, one coming out eitherside of the truck though, so I would need another bracket for the drivers side exhaust tip.

Or should I just get the aluminized steel?

Yeah most modern high quality cat back kits install very easy with minimal effort really. Granted you still need to crawl on the ground under the truck.

Just a tip, don't use those stupid ubolt clamps. Use the good band clamps if the kit doest already come with them.

I've had my exhaust done by these guys on my other truck before it got t-boned and written off. My dad does some work for them, so they offered a cash deal on my last exhaust (getting the same thing for this one.), so hopefully they're willing to do another cash deal.

thanks for the help

I got a Gibson SS cat back 6 years ago it bolts on cat flange 3.5" single in and 3" duels out over axles and behind wheels on 45`s. All material supplied It was a east install and just cut old exhaust out. I think it was cheaper than the one you are looking @ even with Canadian money  Good SS quality and good growl with no drone.

Aluminized steel will probably outlast the truck, or at least how long you have it. My truck is 12 years old going on 13 and its still got the stock exhaust with no signs of rotting out, but only 71,000 miles.
