Sunroof Leak?

2008 Silverado LTZ Z71 Extended Cab w/ Sunroof

Driving to work this morning in a pretty heavy rain, I noticed a drop of water hit the center console. I looked up around the sunroof and didn't notice anything odd. At the next stoplight, I felt around the sunroof and nothing was wet. As I drove on, I saw another drop of water out of the corner of my eye. At the next light, I looked around a bit more and notice the water was dripping from the passenger side of the overhead console (near the map lights). I reach up and felt around the console and the headliner on the passenger side of the console only had about a 1.5" spot that was sopping wet. The water was dripping from there.

I assumed the water came in through the sunroof somehow. I looked at the seals on the outside when I got to work (in a covered area) and didn't see anything that looked bad. As I hadn't had this problem before, I chalked it up to a fluke and proceeded about my workday. When I was ready to leave to go home, I reached up and felt the same spot and it had dried out. On the way home (still raining), no more water dropped, but when I got home and felt around again, that same spot was getting wet again.

I've had this truck since early last November and have driven it in a number of rains and it's been piled high with snow (and associated melt) and this hasn't happened before. Anyone have any thoughts of where to look for the source of this? Maybe, if this truck has them (I'm assuming it does), a drain hole in the sunroof has become clogged?

I've had numerous (GM) cars with a sunroof and this is first leak I've ever seen.

I'd appreciate any advice.

Thank you!

Scott

I can say that I had a Monte Carlo that leaked when it would rain out because the sunroof drains were plugged. Shoot a little air in the drains with light pressure and see it that works. It worked for me, never had an issue after I did that.

Well, this is driving me up the wall. I've done everything I can think of to the drain holes in the sunroof and I'm still getting water dripping from the overhead console on the passenger side whenever it rains anything more than a very light rain.

However, I'm now wondering if it's the sunroof at all. Looking at it today, I was standing in the bed of the truck when I noticed this:

Any chance this could be where the water is coming from? Could water be getting through the crack and getting into the roof of the cabin through the third brake light and somehow traveling to the front of the cabin? I've ordered a new third brake light, so I guess I'll find out soon enough.

From what I read, yes that could be causing it. People who have replaced the bulbs / compromised the seal report wet headliners. One thing I know is when you introduce water to the cab, it can go anywhere. I wouldnt be surprised at a wet floor board from a leaking third brake light.

When you pull the old 3rd light off, you'll see theres kind of a channel/lip that runs around the top inside of the cab. I suspect you've not leveled your truck? That said, water in 3rd brake light is probably making its way forward due to rake of the truck. To double check your moonroof drains, open it up and slowly pour a couple cups of water in the molded trough and watch/listen for the water draining.

Correct that the truck is not leveled (although it's something I want to do). I'm thinking more and more that the cracked light is where the water's coming from. I had already tried pouring water in the sunroof channel and didn't get water inside.

Thanks BatWolf and cooltc2004 for the thoughts!

Good deal man, hope the new light solves your issue! Ever think about blacked out lights?

When you replace the light which is where I think the water is entering take some silicone and run a bead around the back of the light gasket before re installing.
Good call! Will make sure to do this.

Not really. I actually like the contrast the current lights provide against the black paint of the truck.

all sunroofs leak that's part of ownership

1) clean it right (dont use incompatible chemicals)

2) remove / reinstall seal (dont take it completely off). clean inside of seal while your doing that.

if that didn't work you need a new seal

3) the other common thing is track is dirty and or bent a little. look in there see if there's anything stuck in it or it's dirty. DONT bend it

there are adjustments you'd probably have to remove headliner to get to. dont remove head liner unless you have a manual describing all the ins and outs and are not a cluts (or you'll get an air-bag in your head, destroy the head liner, have to pay to fix it anyway: there's allot behind the average headliner to go wrong like pillar removal and seat belt damage if your unaware of such things)

Alrighty then. I guess I wasn't so lucky. We had a ton of rain today and the truck sat outside in the parking lot while I was at work. When I got in the truck this afternoon to go home, I found a water on my center console and the overhead console was wet in the exact same place again. So obviously I haven't fixed the issue, even though there's been no evidence of wet in several rainstorms since I replaced the third brake light.

I have no idea where to go with this now. *sigh*

You might wind up having to pull the headliner and getting out there with a hose and watching to see where the water is coming in. I would be back and looking at the sun roof.

The Onstar Antenna looks like it's well sealed. I have no idea how water would be getting in around it, but I guess that does't really mean anything.

The idea of pulling the headliner makes me shudder, but I have thought about it. Don't have the first clue how to go about doing that though. I'll have to search around to see if I can find a how-to.
