Edbrycem: I would consider a thousand miles per quart pretty bad. And at this point a range and a catch can probably won't fix your problem it might help prevent further damage but the damage has probably already been done

I just installed the Range device yesterday. I love how it doesn't lag anymore when slowly accelerating because its in 4 cyl mode. I seem to have noticed most oil consumption on the highway when 4cyl was more active then in town. Could be coincidence, I don't know. But I'll post back after putting some miles on with the Range device installed.

Update from my original post. if you didn't read, a low oil, stop engine message came on my dic in November. So I check the oil and it even on the dipstick. I think I was around 5k miles in to my extended performance oil change. Anyways, I brought it to the dealer late novemeber, early december to initiate the 2k mile oil consumption test. After driving nearly 500 miles yesterday, I just cleared the 2k mile mark by about 15 miles when I arrived at the dealership. an hour into my appt (getting a 60k mile tune up as well, I'll prolly regret that) they came out and gave me a loaner, saying that it's definitely consuming a decent amount of oil and they will call me when they figure out/fix the issue. It's hopefully at least looking like new pistons and rings. I pray they don't try any funny business with me as I've bought both our vehicles from them. But we'll see.

UPDATE: I just got off the phone with the Service Dept at the dealership. My truck has been there since Monday. I called on Wednesday to see if they had a diagnosis on what was cauing the oil consumption and was told that they are trying to figure out what is wrong and that the motor is apart. I called yet again today to figure out if they have a handle on what is causing the problem and now I'm told it's going to be 2 weeks or so. I'm driving around in a Equinox loaner and look like an idiot. What is the issue with telling me WTH is going on with my truck, and why do I have to keep calling. Shouldn't there be some sort of professionalism of letting one know what is going on with their pride and joy? I'm a little bit pissed off to say the least, I guess I should've known this was going to be a bumpy ride as soon as I grabbed my kids car seat outta the back seat while in their garage. Everyone smoking in the mechanic shop, real professional. What should I do?

Two days short of 8 weeks and I got my truck back yesterday... Oil consumption revealed it had burnt 4 3/4 quarts of oil in 2900 miles.

The bill with parts list.

buckeye,

Since your truck is out of warranty coverage, who is going to pay that repair bill? 50/50 between you and GM or all from your pocket or all from GM?

I purchased an extended warranty with the truck. This cost me (on top of extended warranty that was like $1800) a $100 deductible.

That receipt is confusing. I'm hoping that is a set of pistons and not the price for one. As that would prolly be world's most expensive.
Yes, it was all 8. They also replace the oil pump and oil pickup but I don't see that listed here.?

I would the them pen it in on that receipt then, just in case it goes bad. I really hope my truck doesn't take that long, I really wasn't expecting it to be that difficult of a job.

Is there any member in the forum oil consumption problem being solved after driver-side valve cover being replaced and oil pan deflector being installed?
If your dealer told you that's the solution, they're trying to cover a bigger problem. You bought the vehicle, with a factory warranty. It's up to you to push them to fix it. If you consuming oil, your piston rings are bad. Putting on a new valve cover and an oil deflector is polishing a turd.

Just got off the phone with the dealership and honestly couldn't be any happier. They have the motor out and inspected it. Gashes on the walls of the cylinders, and corroded plugs. They have been in contact with gm assistance and are looking at getting me a new motor vs replacing the parts. I am delighted.
