2008 will be the LMM varient of the duramax. They are pretty solid as far as the engine goes. They do have both EGR and DPF on them, so you will have regens to deal with unless its been taken care of already.
Main thing with maintenance is keeping a regular interval. On my personal truck I do 5k intervals, which works out to twice a year for the oil. Fuel filter I do every other oil change, same with the trans filter (spin on).
Also be sure to keep the air filter clean as that will definitely hinder the performance.
