can changing gear ratio to 3.73-4.10 make a difference going up mountains as in highway mountain not towing anything just going up mountains since my 4.3l can barely go up lake tahoe mountains and camp by myself alot but the way up there is always a struggle with my silverado 08 can anybody help me out thanks

Either way I'd go 4.10. My 95 had the 4.3 and 3.73. It did fine. But 4.10 would have been even better.

My 01 has 4.10 but that's a 5.3 so that's not a apples to apples comparison.

im not sure but i know its not near 3.73-4.10. so it can help me even though mine is only rwd? and do i have to change my tire too or is that optional?

It doesn't matter whether it's 2wd, 4wd, awd or what haveyou.

I'd figure you what ratio you have now.

Look in your glove box at the silver sticker with all the 3 digit codes on it. Look for the codes that start with G.

GU4= 3.08
GU5= 3.23
GU6= 3.42
GT4= 3.73
GT5= 4.10
G80= LOCKING DIFF

i only have a 3.23, so im guessing 3.73 would be enough to go up lake tahoe mountain? and do i have to change tire size as well right now i have 265/70/17 thanks for answering my questions i really appreciate it

A 255/70/17 or 275/65/17 would drop you down about 1.6% overall tire diameter. That would help for sure. Cost considerably less than a gear change too. However the gear change depending on what you went too would help a lot more. Honestly not entirely sure about what is best with the 6 cylinder but know the 3.73 is pretty much the best middle range gear for all around use in the 5.3.

If I'm changing gears I'm not going to waste my time and money on 3.73. I'm going 4.10.

My 5.3 gets 14 city and 17 highway @70mph with stock 265/75r16 tires and 4.10 gears.

I'd much rather have more power than more mpg. It is a truck after all.

cool thanks i will most likely will change my gear to 4.10 then hopefully that would be enough going up the lake tahoe mountains

Yeah like I said, my 95 with 3.73 could maintain speed up the mountains in PA. But it would be screaming if I wanted to really get up them.

4.10 would have been even better. My 01 will hold 4th going up them below like 60. If I want to go faster, it will want to be in 3rd sometimes.

cool thanks ive been debating if i should or 3.73 or 4.10 ill definately do 4.10 now my weak v6 of a truck can finally go up a mountain haha

Definitely go to 4.10's. I had 2003 4.3L 2wd 1500 auto and I always wished it had better gearing. And that truck had 3.42's. Plus if you ever do decide to get a boat or camper, it will tow it that much better.
