I think in my friend's 4.3 he averages like 20 but I am not sure how true that is
Well your friend is probably correct as am I.

Interesting, his is an 01 though I would figure that he has worse than your newer truck just from age over time. Also he is a friend I posted where a bunch of stuff is falling off his truck like his oil pan and he is just leaking so I think there is probably something in the engine too

I finally got to "really" drive my 00, 4.3 4wd X-cab... (I got it just before shutdown of NJ MVC). Anyway I did 2 round trips moving my daughter for med-school, (Lakewood NJ-Hershey PA), 155 miles each way and I was impressed, I averaged over 20 mpg. The truck was loaded inside & out and I'm a pretty mellow driver so speed was averaging 65-ish... For an old hi mile truck, I think that's great... The only things I did to it: New fuel filter, PVC, Oil change, Air filter, cabin filters and battery.... I also put air in the tires, I like to run them +4 PSI... Maybe this week I get it legal, MVC scheduled to reopen tomorrow.

That's something to be proud of. The best I've got is 19.5 and that is with the truck empty but I've never checked it with all interstate driving..

I have a 2006 1500 WT and get about 17 mpg. I drive mostly short trips though so it might better on long runs.
That is about what mine has averaged in the summertime with the AC going. I got about 19 in cold weather.

1994 Sierra C1500 Standard cab, short bed loaded with tools and gear: 14-15 in town, 17-18 on Interstate @ 80 MPH for 4 hours. About the same as when it was new off the lot. 238K miles, $13,112 maintenance since 09/1994. It was a new fleet truck still on the lot when the '95's came out. It's got AM/FM radio and A/C. That's all I need for bells and whistles.
