4.88s & Still a Turd!

4.88s & Still a Turd!

Postby SLE Z71 [OP] » Jun 30 2021, 2:47am

Good evening everyone,

I recently swapped out the 3.73s with 4.88s with a Yukon duragrip carrier.
Truck is a 2001 5.3 with 135k kms on the motor, truck has 750 8-) mild trans build with shift kit, vett servo, 3-4 clutch pack and the typical refurb baby blue converter which i believe is 1800-2000 stall. Headers, black bear tune (egr & front 02 sensor delete), volant intake, electric fan swap, borla pro xs, stock cats (high flow on order) sitting on 35x12.5x18s and lifted 8"
New MAF sensor, plugs & wires. I recently checked my fuel pressure at the rail and it was only at 44psi, turned out my filter was clogged so i changed that and now currently sitting at 50psi which is better but not great.

I'm lost for words on where to start because my truck is a complete dog even empty, and comparing to my buddys 02 (same set up just 4.10s & 35's) i can spin those tires until i let off the gas and i cant even break lose on wet grass  and towing a 7x14 enclosed for work daily (4700lbs -/+ trailer and tools) is a job in its self.

It literally feels like the truck slowly gains power when you mash the gas and doesn't really wake up till 2nd or 3rd gear at 2500-3000rpms. Tires wont even churp off the line unless the roads wet or i hit gravel.
Only difference between 3.73s and 4.88s that i can tell is i rev out at 2500rpms on the highway where it used to be 1500-2000rpms and averaging 30L/100kms

Open to all options and suggestions.

Well, you have diagnosed a bad fuel pump, and are complaining that your gears didn’t make a difference without fixing the fuel pump. It might be crazy, but maybe you should replace the fuel pump.

Could have left the truck bone stock and it would have towed 4700 pounds just fine.....Just sayin'.....

Long tube headers and stock cats do not go together, did you mean short tube headers and stock cats?

Front O2 delete? Yeah I know why it's a turd, cause you deleted the O2 sensor you actually needed.

Step 1 is it currently throwing any codes? Was the mail order tune for the current mods? And I sure hope you mean rear O2's were deleted, the front ones are needed.

I hear that black bear does logging when they set you up a tune. Can you send them logs to see if they see anything odd going on?

Black Bear wouldn't have even tuned it if it was missing the front O2's which are actually critical for the truck to even run.

I would ask Black Bear to check some logs. They should be able to tell if it is knocking/pinging which weak or bad fuel pump will probably cause. Because you are running the huge tires they may have tuned it conservatively and left in all or most of the torque management for the transmission so it would stay happy. The TM really makes a difference in how much power you are "allowed" to put through the transmission to the ground, and compound that with huge heavy tires and possibly weak/bad fuel pump and it could be pretty sad.

Realistically these engines don't even hardly start making power til the upper 2k-3k RPM range anyway so that sounds about right.

Spinning 35" tires with a 5.3L even with decent mods is asking quite a bit as well.

I also do want to note that unless he has HPTuners he will be unable to send them logs anyhow

No codes at all and yes I meant rear 02s not fronts.
A local shop tuning shop did all the tuning work.

My mistake I meant rear 02s. Yeah they are bbk shorty headers and factory cats to my understanding. Like I mentioned high flow cats are on order.
