Brake issue while backing up boat trailer

Brake issue while backing up boat trailer

Postby BoHunter0210 [OP] » May 21 2020, 2:12pm

2016 Chevy Silverado crew can, 5.3l. Truck just about 60,300 miles.

Towing my 16’ job boat last night and while backing it in my brakes started acting funny. Almost like the anti lock system was triggering by the sound however there were no brakes. You had to double press the brakes to get them to stop the truck/trailer. This happened at the boat launch, and when I returned home backing into my driveway. Truck is equipped with trailer braking, however, this small boat/trailer doesn’t have them.

What could be the issue? Thanks

Hmmm.....sounds like my 2015...

Recently and sporadically I have noticed something similar. When backing down my driveway towards my garage, which is about 100 feet on a 5 degree downward slope of grass/dirt/gravel the pedal will kind of shudder and I can hear the anti-lock pump kick on. Also seems to happen when backing up my 16 foot cargo trailer, with or without the trailer brakes connected. No codes, no warnings. Have taken it in, but the dealer isn't able to duplicate the problem, and they wont troubleshoot it without a code. I have almost 98K miles, and I'm almost out of warranty.

The research ive done so far has me thinking vacuum pump. Sounds like it’s recalled however, I don’t remember getting a letter about this issue. The recall I had fixed before was for the grade braking.

Anyone else familiar with this?

I had the pump recall done. Didn't affect anything.

There was a couple different recalls relating to braking.

Vacuum pump was an issue, the more recent one is the reprogramming of the brake module. You can look up on chevy if your truck has any open recalls. Or call a dealer and give them your vin.

Might be a wheel speed sensor issue. My old '01 was covered by a wheel speed sensor corrosion recall/TB. The behavior it exhibited - low-speed ABS activation - was pretty much exactly what you describe.

I agree with the wheel speed sensor. Does the problem occur usually when you have the steering wheel turned in one direction or the other or does it also happen when backing up with the wheel straight?
