Can I pull a two horse trailer with my Cab-over camper on?

Postby Kayleen12 [OP] » Jun 29 2020, 10:44pm

Hello!
I am wondering if it would be too much to pull a two horse trailer with my cab over camper in the bed. My truck is a 2009 Chevy Silverado 1500 with the tow package. The cab over is 1200 lbs fully loaded and the trailer is 4400 lbs but I would be adding two horses, each around 1000 lbs. So the trailer would be 6400 lbs. We would be driving about 4 hours 1 way through some steep grades in Alaska. Will this be too much for my truck? Any advice or input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Welcome to the forum

Yeah you would be over on payload for sure with that.

If I recall the max payload any of the gmt900 trucks had was around 1900lbs or just over.

So with a 1200lb slide in, plus a 6400lb trailer with a tongue weight of say 700lbs (could be more or less depending on setup of your trailer) that puts your payload at 1900lbs. That's not even counting the driver, and passengers, extra gear, etc.

So youd definitely be over by the time you are ready to hit the road. Over by how much would depend on the trailer and what all you plan to put in the truck as well as how many people are in it.

But with a maxed out payload, the truck will really be dragging if you dont have bags or additional springs.

Thank you! I was wondering how close I would be. It's a bummer but I would rather not kill my truck! Thanks for the help!

Yeah unfortunately that's that downfall of the 1500 trucks. You'll almost always run out of payload before anything else.

Answer to your question is no.

We had a 2007 2500HD crew cab standard bed with the Duramax pulling a GVWR 8500 lb. 2 horse trailer with tack room. When we added 1500 lb. cabover camper it was too much for that truck. Issue was the horse trailer's tongue weight is 750 lbs. ( I have a tongue weight scale). Add that to the 1500 lb. camper and that's 2250 lbs. The trucks total payload capacity was 2400 lbs. (diesel engines weigh a lot) and the label stating camper weight (inside the glove box) was 1443 lbs. So technically we were 800 lbs. over weight once the horse trailer was hooked up. We had air bags on the truck but the handling was not good, too much sway. We drive in the mountains a lot and needed a truck to handle those driving conditions so we traded that truck in and got a 3500HD which has a 2943 lb. camper load rating. That truck handles the camper and trailer great.

Find out what your trailer tongue weight is and find a truck that can handle the loaded camper and trailer. My 1500 label says "This truck should not be used to carry a slide in camper" but it can tow a 5th wheel/gooseneck with a 1080 lb. tongue weight.

Quick check on the payload rating sticker on the door post should tell you you’ll be over. My truck only has 1531 lb payload capacity.

That door sticker is for total weight, cargo and passengers. The one in the glove box is for cargo weight.

The 1500s and even some 2500 trucks dont list any slide in camper weights becasue GM doesnt recommend them

But either way, it's your payload rating that matters since that's all you can "legally" carry in/on the truck.

Mine is on the post. Door itself has all GVW and axle numbers.

It may be reversed but that’s where mine are.
