I have a 2014 gmc 2500 6.0 w/ 3.73 gearing

We’re looking at a fifth wheel camper. The camper is dry weight of 8100 and pin weight of 1500 lbs.

Loaded I would be at or near the max capacity of the 3.73 gears. I would be pulling from tn to mi 1 round trip per year then a handful of times around middle tn

Would it make sense to upgrade to the 4.10 gearing for that small amount of towing or should I be ok keeping the 3.73? I’ll have this truck for 5-6 more years at this time.

Changing gear ratio will not change your weight ratings.

It will however make it easier to pull the trailer.

However, it's not worth the cost to go from 3.73 to 4.10. The jump isn't large enough to justify the money.

Reason thinking about it - the manual shows 4500 lbs more trailer weight capacity

9,400 w/ 3.73
13,900 w/ 4.10

Yes.

That's why you dont buy the 2500 with 3.73 gears lol.

Unfortunately you are stuck with that rating. Nothing you can do to change it.

Like I said you can change the ratios to make it pull it easier, but legally your still limited to that weight.

All the ratings are listed on your door sticker. Those are what you should go off of as far as finding your true max trailer weight you can pull.

agreed with trax..

Figure about $1000 per axle to regear and yes it would help.

However if you are involved in an accident and somehow its brought up that you were over the trucks rated capacity then im not sure how that would turn out for you. They will likely look at the truck capacity and not take into consideration that you changed gears.. makes me wish that dealers would re-certify the trucks or whatever if you let them do the regear.

That’s crazy. My 2011 1500 with 5.3 and 3.42 gears is rated to 9,500. How is that possible that a 2500 with 3.73’s is only rated to 9,100?

legally speaking, I believe the trailer still meets the requirement, but its close; under 500 lbs to spare, and right at payload capacity. (figure about 9200 lbs loaded - wouldn't travel with wet tanks)

If your that close I'd upgrade to a truck with 4.10s.

It's not fun trying to load the trailer just so you can be under weight.

Plus especially being a camper it adds up fast.

What I was saying is still your truck would be tagged from the factory as having 3.73s thus stuck at the 9,400 rating instead of the 13,900 even-though you upgraded to 4.10s

Unless you can get a dealer to recertify it or whatever needs to be done? I don't know if that's even possible.. but should be I would think?
