Performance upgrades for towing

Postby BeardedKillJoy [OP] » Feb 24 2021, 1:46am

Hey everyone!

I am looking to add get a little more out of my truck for towing. I have a 2017 crew cab 1500, Z71 and all star package, 3.42 axel and my truck has the rough country level in it, I have 285/65/18 duratracks on as well. Everything else is stock, no air filter upgrade or anything like that. I have a weight distribution hitch and am pulling a 30 foot camper. I also have the Roadmaster active suspension installed on my truck.

I want to get a diablew tune, but before I do I'm wondering what performance upgrades I should do to get the most out of the truck and the subsequent custom tune. K&N air filter? What else? What are your guys suggestions? I appreciate any help and feedback, but please don't tell me to get a bigger truck. It's not in the cards until we pay off a vehicle so I need to make this work a little better for the next year.

Best thing you could do is dump the 3.42 gears for some 4.10 gears. That alone will give more felt performance than anything else you can do besides getting into forced induction or into the motor.

A tune will help a bit, but you'll only get so much out of it. Headers, intake, exhaust, and good tune will be about as far as you can go without breaking into the motor of going forced induction.

Dropping down a size in tires (265/x/x) would help a little as well. Might consider it on next set if you really need the towing power more often.

Save the money you would spend on modifications and put it towards a new truck when it is in the cards.

Performance upgrades for towing

Postby 660catman » Feb 24 2021, 5:15pm

I’ve done nothing to my truck to pull my 30’ 6500lb camper other than Hellwig helper springs and LT E rated tires. 60 mph is my towing speed and I’m in 4th gear. Rpm’s are around 2500 and has no issue pulling. Sure I’m not a speed demon and I don’t care if other trucks with campers pass me. In 2019 I went on a 2500 mile trip to Yellowstone and Jackson Hole. The truck worked leaving Jackson heading east to Casper, Wy as it’s a long climb.

If I really felt the need and had money, the gear change would be first on the list. Worst part is having to do 2 diffs.

Edit: tires are LT275-65-18

Not sure what the weight of the camper is but the best bang for your buck will be a good tune first.

On my 09 5.3l 6 speed it seemed to gear hunt a lot on the slightest inclines sometimes when pulling 5k or so. Even with OD off it did not know if it wanted to be in 4th or 5th. You do make your power in higher RPMs though.

I ditched the 3.42s for 4.11s and now 4.56s running 285/75r17s on both setups (tires measure to 33 1/2" diameter.)

In my opinion if you have a full size truck, large heavy tires and you tow often then a gear swap would be a great thing, after the tuner. It does range from $800-1200 an axle and you have to do both if you have a 4x4. These trucks should have came stock with 4.10s.
