Geez. The 4 speed aint that bad. I tow fine with it. 6 is obviously more ideal.
I can tell you that I did not notice much of a difference between towing my ~3000lbs boat versus a ~4500lbs trailer. I knew it was there, but it wasn't earth shattering. And that was back when I had a 1500 with the "horrible" 4 speed and 3.42's.
To the OP, if your going to get a bigger truck, why shy away from long trips?
There is always enough time to do it over again, but never enough time to do it right the first time.

Short trips with the old truck, and longer ones once we update to a newer truck.
