uhaul car trailer experince

Postby vroom_vroom [OP] » Nov 11 2020, 8:34pm

looking for some insight on a renting a car trailer to run from ohio to nevada. theres not really a weight distribution option on them so wondering how it would do on a long highway trip with my 1500 ('11 6.2) the car weighs in at approximately 3300 lbs but its not running so a transport cost would be very big $$$$ also wondering if a set of sumo springs would help with the situation.

last time i used a uhaul car hauler, it was towing a race truck that was 5000lbs and it did decent (this was with a 05 1500 ). i did probably 200-250 miles with it. the only thing was the supplied straps suck on the trailer. so i would bring all your own lock down equipment ( i did thankfuly) but they dont "require it" .....so i believe youll be just fine

I wouldn't think twice about it. Balance the car on the trailer to give you a bit of tongue weight, but not so much that you fanny is dragging. The car trailers are generally double axle, and fairly easy to tow.

Yeah definitely get the trailer and not the dolly.

They tow decent, but the older ones are fairly heavy for what they are. With the car only weighing 3300lbs it won't be an issue though.

Just make sure you have some tongue weight for sure. And quadruple check and then check every so often, the ball lock. All the uhaul trailers I've rented have had the stupid threaded ball coupler lock. I hate those. They can loosen up if they aren't working 100%. It should ratchet in a sense but they don't always. So just check them.

But other than that, you should be good to go. I also wouldn't go too terribly fast with them either. Uhaul says 55mph, but I've had no issues going more than that. I'd stay at 65 or under though. That's really with any towing. The faster you get going, the longer it takes to stop, and the harder it will be to control it, should something go wrong.

Towed both a 2012 chevy malibu and a 1974 D**** charger on one. The charger on a 4 hour trip through some small mountains.

Pulled no issues with my truck, regular 2" reese drop hitch.

Nice! This is what I needed to hear. Sounds like getting a non moving vehicle on the trailer is the bad part! And that I can deal with.

I have shipped nonrunning cars and even a body shell on caster rollers and the motor on the side! I just takes a LOT of work to find the right guys for a good price. Dealing with the big haulers is like dealing with 3 world dictators... hate them.

You should have no problems. I towed a N*** Maxima from Arizona to Missouri and it towed just fine on a Uhaul trailer. No sway at all.

I was a U-Haul dealer for more than 20 years. The Auto Transports ("AT") are nice trailers. You shouldn't have any trouble whatsoever.

I have heard they are solid trailers but have no first hand experience. We are just debating on bringing it back with salt on the roads back east or wait till spring.
