If i go over any large hills or over the rockies i usually just run towing mode when empty or towing mode + 5th gear manual if pulling a trailer. Thats just my preference.....

I found this document on the National Highway Transportation and Safety Administration site. They have a whole section on Manufacturer communications. Perhaps this Bulletin will shed some light on the GRADE BRAKING Feature that some GM trucks have.

Hope this helps a little.

I use tow haul mode let the TCM computer do the managing. If I am going up a long hill or long flat areas I will use manual and put in a gear that will have the engine run about 2300-2500 RPM`s this eliminates tranny hunting for gears and it won`t heat up hunting all the time.

Well Billybass, hopefully he figured it out sometime in the last 8 years since he posted the question.
