what mode to use going up and down hills

what mode to use going up and down hills

Postby elprofe [OP] » Jul 20 2012, 12:19am

I will be taking out my trailer 21ft ROO dry weight 4100 lbs with my new truck sierra 1500 5.3 for the first time this weekend. obviously I 'll have more weight with kids, bikes, propane, some firewood, ice chests, etc. I 'll be setting up the integrated electric brakes tomorrow. I have a weight distribution hitch. but my question for those of you who have similar or same trucks is what do you use when going up and down hills? do you use the tow/haul feature and leave it on D drive or do you use the manual feature and use 4th or 5th gear? or could you use a combination of both? I am pretty new to all this and all help would be greatly appreciated. I know there are variables to consider but this is just in general. thanks a lot.

I generally use 3 and keep it in towhaul mode. You can shift back into D when you see some flat terrain.

I use the tow/haul mode and just leave it in D. If you slow down the transmission will down shif and slow you down.

With my 2012, I use tow/haul in "D". If you use T/H in manual, it downshifts aggressively...so I use "D".

thanks for all the quick responses. it is a 6 speed. the grades are not too bad. there are a couple of steep grades leaving the Sonora area to Pinecrest here in California. I don't know if you guys are familiar with highway 108.

Most of the time I use tow/haul mode in Drive, but when I get a long straight road, I tend to turn the Tow/haul off and see the rpm's go down, I also watch my speed and drive for the best economy, also the transmission temperature, mine usually goes up to about 180 F. I have been on the road since June 1st towing my 7000 lbs trailer so I drive for economy, my average for the total of the trip up to now (4000 miles) is 10.54 mpg, which I think is great for a 2500 HD pulling my trailer. I hope this helps.

I have never used the tow haul mode. Don't feel the need for it most of the time.
