2000 Silverado 4x4 troubles

2000 Silverado 4x4 troubles

Postby JakeH [OP] » Mar 25 2020, 4:31am

Hi, I’ve recently had trouble getting my 2000 1500 z71 Silverado to engage 4x4. When I press the button for 4HI it blinks for 15 seconds the front diff actuator locks, then unlocks and the 4HI blinking stops and goes back to 2HI. The service 4wd has been going on and off occasionally for the past few months, but 4x4 just recently quit engaging. I first checked the ground connections for the 4x4 system and cleaned them to bare metal, this didn’t help. I then pulled the transfer case encoder motor connections and found that it was getting around 9 volts. I then pulled the encoder motor and hooked it to a 12 volt battery and it moved to the 4LO position. I plugged it back in and the LCCM indicated that it was in 4LO. When I try to engage 4HI the encoder motor hums and dosent turn at all under the trucks power. I’m wondering if the encoder motor not getting the full 12v it needs is stopping it form operating correctly. What I’m currently looking for is a good wiring diagram of the LCCM and encoder motor. If anyone has any other components to check or other ideas I’m glad to hear them.

My 2000 had an issue while it was still under warranty with it not going into 4wd.
The lights on the controller would flash and stay in 2wd.
It was the selector button module on the dash.
They replaced that and it has worked since.

Might be something you should check

My boys’ 2000 had the same issue with the original owner and when he replaced the button selector module, everything went back to working.

Under the truck drivers side frame is the ground wire for the 4x4 ..
Unbolt it and make sure its clean , and.has a good connection...

Also the Selector buttons is another thing that can be replaced for not to much money...

I did this on my 03 Tahoe , and Solved my issue

Well I did finally get the 4wd functioning correctly again. I checked the continuity of the wiring harness for the ATC and found one wire to have no connection at all. After a little research I found out the wire provided power to the electromagnetic brake that holds the encoder motor and the TC in gear. This explained why I could hear the encoder motor buzzing when I tried to engage 4wd, but it didn’t move since the brake couldn’t disengage. Since the break in the wire was somewhere hidden in the wiring harness I simply spliced a new wire from the C151 connection under the hood all the way to the encoder motor. After that the service 4wd light went away and I haven’t seen it in a couple of weeks! Thank you all for your feedback!

Congratulations
Wiring is always a hard thing to diagnose and a broken wire, when no reason for the brake, is the hardest.
Your persistence is applaudable
