DEXRON III or Dexron VI or either one?

2001 Chevy Silverado-4.8 liter 4x4- transmission fluid type.

Postby awbooth [OP] » Apr 07 2021, 2:13am

I have a 2001 Chevy Silverado. I will be changing the transmission fluid and filter this week. I initially purchased Dexron VI transmission fluid but than read in my Haynes Manual that this year taked Dexron III.
My question is could I use either Dexron III or VI or Dexron III only? Thx for your help!!

Good Point, I will check the book. The reason for my questioning is I can't find any Dexron III in my local store... This may be do to my truck being 20 years old, stores move forward with the times meaning they don't carry what the Haynes Manual suggests. The reason for my question was to see if Dexron VI can be used for older model trucks knowing it is good for newer trucks. Does that make sense?

It's backwards compatible.

Ok cool. I was hoping so. So since I'm not going to do a flush, just a pan drop, filter change, it's ok for the old Dexron III still left in the transmission lines/cooler etc to mix with the new Dexron VI? Thx

I usually will do a double drain and fill. That will get you mostly new fluid.

They don't hold very much fluid and it's fairly inexpensive so I just get enough to fill the pan twice.

Drain it out, fill with fresh fluid, run it, drain it again, change filter, fill with new fluid, done. As long as it isn't super nasty fluid in there you'll be fine doing it that way.
