2009 Ft axle weight oil

75w90 or 80w90?

2009 Ft axle weight oil

Postby bsaumph [OP] » Apr 02 2020, 6:30pm

I have a 2009 Silverado Z71 that I'm changing fluids on. My manual states: "Front axle 1500, 80x90" then "Front axle (1500,2500hd,3500,hd) 75w90. I would assume I need to use 80w90 but the "1500" in the second description makes me uncertain. Anyone KNOW which grade is CORRECT for my truck? Thanks

Welcome to the forums.

You're fine with the 75w90. That's a synthetic lubricant, whereas I believe 80w90 would only be available as a conventional fluid.

I'd recco Amsoil if you don't have one already, costs more, not as easy to acquire, but IMO it's the best you can get. But you can be fine with Mobil1 or another popular brand.

Strange it was separated out like that for the 2009's. My 2010 owners manual shows 75W90 synthetic for both front and rear.

75W-90 is perfectly fine. The 75W/80W portion is just the cold weather rating of the gear lube, W = Winter. At normal operating temps they are BOTH a 90 wt gear oil. 75W-90 is just more fuel efficient. The only reason they show 80W-90 in the manual is that the front axle in many 4x4's see's infrequent use compared to the rear which is always in use and fuel economy is not a consideration.

But if you just have to have an 80W-90 you can order it here (3rd from right in pic) and never leave the house. ►100% Synthetic Gear Lubes

I'm concerned with the synthetic vs dino oil thing. I'm one of those people that believe the manufactures spec out different oils for a reason.

The manufacturers use synthetic across the board now. Much better protection than the regular stuff.

I think it's as simple as a cost thing. The 80W90 conventional is cheaper.

Never noticed that before, I have the same thing in my '09 Sierra manual. On two separate pages, so the wonky screencap...

So a 1500 4WD uses the 80W90, and everything else takes 75W90 synthetic?
