2019 Silverado LD z71 End Play Spec

2019 Silverado LD z71 End Play Spec

Postby FrankenChevy [OP] » Jun 28 2020, 3:11am

Hello.

Let me begin by stating I’ve done a small bit of research and I’m aware that end play is normal on c clip axles. But this is my first axle of this type, as everything before has been of full float design. I want to be ready with the actual Gm spec for this truck, as trips to the dealer are becoming too frequent and messing with my work schedule. It took four trips and two new headlight pods just to fix the white trim from separating from the headlight assembly, two trips to get the leaf spring pad TSB settled (which I had to bring up and press the issue), where they dented my bed beneath the tail light and now it has to be subbed out to a body shop. I’m not upset or trash talking, just want to know what is really correct and what isn’t.

I found a thread on this site pertaining to a 2009 Silverado where a tech stated a spec of 0.012 straight from the GM shop manual. Mine is more than ten times that with over 1/8” of end play. I feel as though the c clips may need to be thicker to allow less slop. Driving through flat parking lots without speed bumps and relatively level roads it clunks around constantly, to the point that I can feel it. Pulling through a parking lot the other day, it must’ve clunked back and forth more than a dozen times as I lumbered through. I hear and feel it constantly.

What say you experts with access to GM SI manual access? What is the factory spec on lateral/side to side end play?

I’ll also add that the truck has 10,500 miles currently and began clunking around the 7,000 mile mark. Before that it was very silent, no noises whatsoever.

Is this a 1500? And can you make a video showing how much endplay you have and put it on Youtube for us to look at?

Yes, 2019 1500 Z71 LD

https://youtu.be/LFRs3xnLFmQ

This video is about a month old. I rechecked it over the weekend, but didn’t think of recording another video. It’s right around 1/8”(0.125). If factory spec is 0.012, then 0.125 is pretty well outside of that.

Thanks for your help getting this squared away. The constant clunking about is not confidence inspiring. I tow my 6000lb tractor-loader-backhoe on a 10k trailer just enough to make me worry about losing an axle on our rural, less than perfect, twisty roads.

Have you popped the diff cover off and taken a look to see if the clips are worn or otherwise damaged?

There is always play side to side, and a audible clunk while pushing the truck side to side.

I've never measured the amount of movement but there is always some. With the cover off, you'll be able to push the axles in and see how much they truly are moving, and how much the clip is retained by when pushed all the way in.

I can. I was curious about swapping the factory fill on the diffs, etc. The truck has just a bit over 10,000miles on it with a 200,000 mile extended warranty. I’ll ask the service guys what gear oils are approved under the warranty.

If you have a warranty and it’s out of spec. Take it to the dealer

Anything that meets the spec. Mobil 1, valvoline, amsoil, etc. Pretty much any 75w90 will be fine.

It's a maintenance item, same as engine oil. So if it meets the spec, you can use it.

10-4

Will Report

I’ll record another video with the dial indicator for the forum and the dealer.

Out of curiosity...the guys with 1500s do your guy’s trucks clunk around quite a bit in flat parking lots?
