6L80 Questions (Probably stupid ones)

6L80 Questions (Probably stupid ones)

Postby SinisterWhales [OP] » Mar 03 2021, 6:03am

Is there a difference between the 6L80’s that are in the trucks with 5.3’s and 6.2’s? And is there a difference between a 6L80 and a 6L80E?

All 6L80 are the "E" models..
No difference between the 5.3 and 6.2.

The 3/4 ton have the 6L90

Cool thanks! Is it possible to fit a 6L90 into a 1500?

The "E" denotes "Electronic" as in controlled by a computer.

Yes but it is not as easy as it used to be going from 4l60 to 4l80

Gotcha, would the truck require physical modifications or is it electric/computer related issues?

Both, driveshaft is shorter for 6L90 and I don’t think the mounts are the same. The TCM is just way different and will require tuning

Looks like will be swapping 6L80’s when the time comes then, thanks. One thing I never understood was why GM put a 6L90 with the 6.0 but a 6L80 with the 6.2 (besides being in the 3/4 ton pickups, wouldn’t it make more sense to mate a 6.2 with a 6L90?

Why are you swapping 6L80s? Is it a rebuild or...? There are 6.2s in trucks that are 1/2 ton. I couldn’t say why or why not they have 6L80s and not 6L90s though
