6l80 reman vs aftermarket?

6l80 reman vs aftermarket?

Postby Slice88 [OP] » Nov 27 2019, 3:42am

Hey guys I’m new to this forum but have found a lot of what you’ve said in other topics extremely beneficial so I’m hoping you can help me out here.

My 2014 GMC sierra just hit 100,000 miles and wouldn’t you know it the 6 speed transmission crapped the bed and am now in need of a new one. I’ve read horror stories of these six speed GM transmissions and I’m wondering if I should opt for an aftermarket or simply go with a remanufactured 6l80 with a good warranty?

What's the price difference? Have you considered pricing one from a salvage yard?

Food for thought: Only transmission that crapped out on me was in a 1997 D***e Caravan. Took it to a reputable tranny shop and was told by the manager/owner/head mechanic that yes, it would cost a bit more to rebuild (as opposed to swapping in a used one, but he assured me that as the tranny had been on the market for a few years, they knew the weaknesses and the rebuild parts would be better than OEM. That tranny rebuild lasted me 121,000 miles before I got rid of the vehicle...tranny was still going strong.

I’m seeing them at the salvage yard for around $2200 in my area as well. On the other hand I have found them online remanufactured with a 5 year 100k mile warranty for $2500 at best buy transmission.com. From what I’ve seen, their reviews are pretty solid. Anyone ever use them?
If I went the aftermarket route it would be closer to the $4000 range. A big price jump but wouldn’t have to deal with these known GM 6 speed TQ or Tranny issues.
