Driveline Issue, maybe?

Postby Ccamp1988 [OP] » Nov 05 2019, 7:31am

First of all Im new to this forum, so Id like to go ahead and thank anyone who takes their time to give me some input on my issue. I have a 03 1500 4x4 Silverado that has developed a Low clunking sound between 30-45 mph. The noise is consistent and doesnt speed up or slow down with rpm or vehicle speed. This happens when driving on pavement and isnt affected by bumps or turning. Sounds like it is coming from up front possible around Tcase, but it was to determine since i cant replicate the noise unless the vehicle is moving at said speeds. I jacked front end and checked for play in wheel bearings and for slop in ujoints and everything feels fine. front suspension seems solid. Anyone ever had this issue?

Welcome to the site.

I wonder if it could be the steering column intermediate shaft under the hood. They can get clunky and that would not vary with vehicle speed or rpm's.

I wondered that also since it seems to be a common issue. But wouldn’t it only make noise when turning? It certainly sounds like it’s up towards the front from inside the cab.

No, it will clunk anytime the suspension moves. I had the same problem on my '00 Silverado. Can you feel it in the steering wheel when you hear the noise?

I checked the Intermediate shaft and drove it down the road to make sure, but nothing out of the ordinary through the steering other than a little excessive play that has been in the truck for the past 80k Ive owned it.
