Heavy Duty Carrier Bearing 8.1 Allison

Heavy Duty Carrier Bearing 8.1 Allison

Postby plwboy [OP] » Feb 29 2020, 4:55am

Hello everyone,
I am new to this forum but have a issue that I could use some help with. I have a 2001 Silverado 2500HD extended cab long bed 4x4 with the 8.1L and Allison. Truck has a 6 inch lift. I use this truck to pull trailers and I go through carrier bearings about every 10k. Does anyone make a good heavy duty carrier bearing for this truck? The ones at the napa parts store dont last at all, one made it 100 miles. the last one they ordered in from somewhere and lasted around 10k miles but was very expensive. If someone could point me in the right direction I would sure appreciate it. Thank You.

Are you talking about the bearing in the support crossmember, for the 2 piece drive shaft?

If so... here is a list of Rockauto offerings.
https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/che ... port,12743
You will have to make sure you pick the right one, based on your truck length, 2wd/4wd etc. It's in the notes of each part.

Basically you want to scroll to the bottom of that list, and anything from Timken, ACDelco or SKF should be about the best you can get. As you have found out, NAPA sells junk and some parts are worth the cost to not have to replace over and over.

Your lift may be wearing them out to fast also, even with a good part it may not solve the problem. So that may be worth investigating too. To harsh of driveline angles maybe?

EDIT: If it is differential bearing, again. Go for GM OEM (which is typically the same as ACDelco) parts.

Yes i am talking about the 2 piece driveshaft center support bearing. The angle isnt too harsh. Just seems like part quality is crap anymore. I appreciate the list from rock auto. I didn't know if there was a specialty driveline heavy duty one out there for pulling or lifted trucks.

My guess would be the angle is bad/incorrect causing accelerated wear.

The center support bearings do not like being worked at angles other than basically flat. It is just suspended in a rubber bushing after all.

Find a driveline specialist shop in your area so they can put eyeballs on it. They will likely point you in the right direction for a long term solution. Keep us posted.

With a 6" lift the angle will be to harsh unless they added a spacer when the lift was installed... As said above take to a drive line specialist and have them correct the issue. The money you spend on someone looking at it will save you in the long run on replacing it all the time

I will get some pictures of the driveline tomorrow. It does have a spacer to drop it down for a better angle. I appreciate everyone's input.

Here are some pics, sorry for the delay, i had to get a different phone. I have also talked to a driveline place in ca and they think the issue might be the splines are wore out causing vibration.
