Need some driveshaft help

Postby Jezerinac [OP] » Nov 09 2019, 9:55pm

Hello my names Chris I have a 2005 Chevy 2500hd 4x4 with the 6.0 gas motor my drive shaft is twisted and rotted through so I’m on the hunt for another one I have a guy with another 2005 Chevy 2500hd but he has the 8.1 and the Allison trans what I’m asking is can I use his shaft or is the Allison trans bigger and the shaft length would be incorrect my truck has a 143.5 wheel base with an mt1 trans code for the 4L80-e so if one could tell me if that shaft would work I’d greatly appreciate it I know I’ll have to change yokes probably but I can do that I got mine off just need a replacement now thanks!

Welcome to the forum

You would need to find a shaft that is out of the same truck configuration you have.

This includes if your truck is 4wd. So youd need to find out of an otherwise identical truck as yours.

Now you may find steel vs aluminum. For this you will just need a conversion u joint since the yolks will not be the same size as far as bearing caps go.

So I have to find one that’s exactly like mine or it won’t work? The shafts are different lengths? What about 1500s? Or 3500s? I’m having a hard time locating one

Yes you need to find essentially the same truck. Same trans, same cab and bed length.

There are some that will interchange as far as length goes. But the 1500 and 2500 will not interchange. Transmission and all are different

Measure yours u joint to u joint then measure the potential donor. You may get lucky, or may not. If you find the same length you may need to swap your input yolk on. You can always compare parts on rock auto.

It cost about the same as a new one to have a new one made atthe local driveshaft shop.
