Rear diff. Capacity

Rear diff. Capacity

Postby Clean2011 [OP] » Mar 31 2020, 8:52pm

Ok, dumb question. I’m going to change out the rear diff.fluid . I’m confused with the fluid capacity. I did a search on here and most say just over 2qts. The amsoil site says 4.2qts, (mines a 8.5 rear end.) I just don’t want to order it and realize once I start the job I’m short a qt. Thanks

It's not 4.2 quarts.

It's right around 3. A tad less. 5 quarts is enough to do the front and rear diffs on a 1500.

Also, the level is 3/8" below the fill hole as per GM. Some just fill till it runs out. But the technical spec is 3/8" below the fill hole.

I believe this info is in your owner's manual, too.

Thats 2.1 qts. (2 qts + 3.2 oz's)

My 2011 took just over 2 quarts. Probably 2.25.

Thanks guys for the help/clarification. I’ve now got my weekend project.

Z15, I just went back and looked at that info. My mistake. That’s what I get for trying to multitask. Haha. Thanks

To be fair - the amsoil website leaves a lot to be desired.

Try looking up the filter for the 6L80E on a 2012 GMC Sierra - it will list the WIX Transmission Filter (58904-EA)......which i believe is for the 4L60.

If you trust the website you'll end up stuck waiting for a local shop's part truck to deliver you the right filter.

I should have known when the included el-cheapo gasket didnt match, but i figured both transmissions used the same filter and I had a separate gasket so i dove in.
