Strange leak on rear axle. Help

Postby Bridger [OP] » Sep 16 2020, 12:17am

So I noticed this leak that seems to be coming from the drivers side where the u bolt holds the axle. I have some pics to show you what I mean. Any ideas?

Clean the dirt off so you can inspect and see where the leak is coming from. that is a weird place to be leaking for sure.

Is it gear oil or brake fluid?

The brake line looks slightly wet right were the axle is covered.

Just making sure it isn't brake fluid spraying out of the line and making it look like the axle is leaking.

But baring that, with how much caked on dirt is there, I have seen axle tubes, especially the 1500 trucks since the tunes are thin, rust out where the spring saddles are.

That looks like an axle tube and since OP isn't complaining about brakes it likely is the tube. Going down the road the wind is aiding in placement of the axle leakage. Just out of curiosity, where do you drive that accumulates the coating on the chassis?

I'm leaning towards brake line. He likely has a spongy brake peddle. Looks to me like spray and then drip. The master will be low on fluid shortly

I'm leaning towards the brake line squirting as well. The whole side of that U-bolt looks wet to come degree. Granted, it could be some capillary action carrying it up the bolt, but I doubt it (and it wouldn't be the first time I was wrong).

Wind when driving blew it back I mentioned previously. Not a diff leak, it's the axle tube at the saddle for U bolt.

I live in Montana in the mountains on a 16 mile long dirt road. :)
