Stuck in 4WD

Stuck in 4WD

Postby BEANERSCHNITZEL [OP] » Jul 12 2021, 7:29pm

So I just bought a 2001 GMC Sierra 2500HD 4x4 with the 8.1. I got a killer deal on it due to the fact that the truck is stuck in 4WD. I figured I could pretty much replace everything and still come out ahead or fair. The transfer case was replaced prior to me purchasing the truck. I have not done anything yet. In fact I won't get the truck until tomorrow, just looking for pointers and a few questions. Facts I have so far... The 4x4 selector switch on the dash has no lights. Nothing on, nothing flashing, etc. however, I have not cycled the key or anything yet. I drove the truck and can confirm it is in fact in 4WD. The front shaft was disconnected and was confirmed that it's driving normal (2WD) now, so it's something on the 4WD side. Minimal Google search is pointing me towards the TCCM. Conflicting info on the transfer case and the speed I can drive. Obviously I don't have the owners manual so I can't look in there (just realized I'm sure I can google that, so I'll do that when I'm done here). But with the front shaft removed, how far and how fast is it safe to drive in 4 HI?? Seems like I should not be driving it like that, but I'm not sure it's actually harming anything. Any advise on that?

The dash switches are notorious for going bad. They are about $80 or so, or if you are handy you can crack open the case and re-solder the wire connections. The axle locker sliders are also known for going bad. Work the switch first, then go from there.

Start by starting your own thread. Then describe the problem you are having.

While driving in 2hi, are you seeing the front output of the transfer case rotating with the front driveshaft out?

The front drivetrain is dragged in 2wd. No power goes tot he front output of the transfer case in 2hi, but the entire front drivetrain moves.

If you are seeing the front driveshaft output (the yoke) moving with the front driveshaft out in 2hi, then selector is stuck in 4hi (or hopefully not 4lo or neutral).

Replaced the dash 4WD selectror switch, nothing changed. Lights flash once really quick when the ignition first turns on, then no lights at all. Ripped into the dash and found the TCCM not sitting in it's factory location and judging by the stickers on it, looks like someone replaced that as well. The transfer case and electric motor on the side of the transfer case has been replaced. Ground under the drivers door is good. Removed the front shaft and driving fine in "2WD". Not sure if the transfer case yoke is spinning or not, I'll have to check that and report back. Also noticing the transmission or something in that region (front of trans, not the transfer case) is whining and the whine goes with the RPM's... Bottom line... I'm at a loss and apparently I'm just gonna have to drop this thing off.

As far as starting my own thread... I thought I was LOL. I'm the FNG
