Transfer case chain

Transfer case chain

Postby Ghostrider1969 [OP] » Nov 10 2019, 7:29pm

Hello everyone I have a 2001 Silverado that I have spent thousands to maintain and keep reliable. My question is my transfer case chain is sloppy is there any way to tighten the chain or do I need to buy a new one. Thanks

I rebuilt a NP203 many years ago, but I'm no expert. However, I would think a new chain and sprockets would be in order.

Don't hear about the transfercases wearing out on these trucks very often, wonder what happened there?

In New Venture/New Process/Magna transfer cases, the chain is not like a motorcycle or bike chain. Its much wider and has 12+ links on a single pin. They can stretch, but highly uncommon. There is a certain amount of slack per spec, it should not be tight from gear-to-gear.

If there some reason why you think you need to replace it?
If you are getting a clunk or vibration, its more than likely a bearing or u-joint before the chain needs to be replaced.
