'06-'08 potential problems

Postby polarisgod [OP] » Oct 11 2016, 9:01pm

I have enough money to buy a '06-'08 chevy/GMC. I've been pricing them in my area (Phoenix, AZ) and a 4x4 ext-cab is what I'm looking for. The thing that scares me is that all of the ones I've found in my price range ($10,000-$12,000) have 130,000-160,000 miles. What issues should I be concerned about that would crop up after so many miles? Or, would many issues have already been delt with by the current owner? I'm talking about front end parts, engine, transmission mostly. ANY help would be appreciated. Also what is the best engine for mileage and light towing? Vortec? LS? Thanks!

Those years cover 2 different body styles.

2006-2007classic is the gmt800(99-07) and 2007-2008 is gmt900(07-13).

Really they are solid trucks for either one. But if you are in a rust prone area, there are some things to look out for.

Like the fuel and brake lines on the GMT800s. As well as rocker and fender well rust.

If they were taken care of, the milage doesn't scare me for either body style.

Thanks, I'm leaning toward the '07+newer body style, but not opposed to '06 or older....

07-09 can have afm related oil consumption issues with higher mileage. Other than that and the 6speed trans they are the same from 07.5-13.

If you buy a 07.5+ then make sure to look into the AFM. Make sure no issues are present. Can wipe a motor out or cause lifter knock and excessive oil consumption. As long as it is either not an issue or has been taken care of then you should be good. Personally I went with older to avoid it altogether but that was my chosen route.

My old 06 was the best truck I've owned... no AFM, good power, decent gas mileage and the cateye front end is one of my favorite body styles. Only thing I did to it was brakes, front hubs and oil changes.

If you get a nnbs with a 4.8 you get the best of both worlds. Newer body style and no afm or six speed tranny. The newer 4.8 has more power than the older 5.3, I've had both
