2014 rear defrost caught fire then shattered glass

Postby Jm91rs [OP] » Feb 20 2021, 2:44am

My father in law’s 2014 silverado double cab, low miles very clean with no problems until today...remote started his truck, went inside a few minutes and when he went out smoke was coming out of the rear window. Turned the truck off and the rear window immediately shattered. He’s furious because he often has his little grandkids in that back seat. No fire damage but he obviously needs a new window and defrost unit. Its at the dealer and they say they’ve never seen it, I’ve never heard of such a thing but of course now that I google it there’s plenty of mentions and the “fix” from a few years ago is to disable the defroster by removing the fuse. Anyone have any luck getting GM to take responsibility for this potentially fatal problem?

You may want to check car complaints.com and type in make, model, and year and more then likely people will post issues with their vehicle and it may be a safety defect on the truck just something to check out. Sorry to hear about you father in laws truck I hope all goes well!

WOW that is a weird one for sure never heard of this before. I know when I bought my truck back in 08 they did disable the defrost water heater thing because of to much heat and fire. I`m glad all is safe and hopefully GM will take care of the truck for your father in law

I cant remember if it was a recall off hand or what but I had to take my truck in so they could inspect the rear power slider motor I believe. Its on the drivers side bottom corner of the window track. It could over heat and cause a fire. They replaced mine. Not sure if he had a power slider and sorry if I'm kind of vague but I forgot all about it until I read this

After years of hanging around here, this is the first time I've heard of this issue. It's got to be scary! Definitely has me thinking of the amount of time in the winter that I just remote start my truck, and never give it a second thought. WOW! Please keep sharing how things go with the repair, and if they find the cause.

I know it isn't a truck but it is a GM product, I have seen a few people complain of the back glass in their 2014 and up Imapalas shattering for no apparent reason. Some attribute it to the rear defroster.

No updates on this as my father in law is out of town, but a quick google search shows me that this has happened on plenty of other trucks and so far the GM official fix is to remove the fuse powering the rear defrost.

https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/gm-r ... ire-risks/

Canada already has a recall, nothing for the US, which is mind boggling unless they were made in a different plant and use different parts.

It’s their windshield
Washer heater all over again. Solution was to pull the fuse and that was it.

A little web search and this is not an isolated incident by any means.

example #1: https://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/topic/ ... my-window/

Canada has a recall for this, the US does not.
