That is also due to the new emissions for 2010 and up that is the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) in Regen Mode. It is just cleaning the soot from the DPF Filter so that is what used to be (Black Soot) is now less toxic and bad for fuel economy.
This may be a failed EGR Cooler but if it smells bad and not like boiling water type of smell than it is Regen mode.
