Used vehicles rebuilt title, accident damage

Postby tniggs876 [OP] » May 04 2021, 5:29am

Hey all. As we all know the used truck market is crazy right now. Dealers are selling 6-7 year old trucks with 100k plus miles for high $20-$30k. When searching for trucks 2014 and newer, crew cab 4x4 with 70k miles or less for $30k or less, many of the trucks I'm finding have reported accident damage (though repaired) and/or they are rebuilt/salvage titles.

Beyond the concerns with insurance not insuring rebuilt/salvage titles, I have a few questions:
1. Is a 2014 CC with 70K or less worth $29k?
2. Are vehicles with reported damage (via carfax) but fixed worth $30k?
3. Is 100k mileage a concern with 2014 and up motors?

I know vehicles are worth what someone is willing to pay for them but I just can't fathom financing a 7 year old truck with 70k miles for $30k. Not financing is not an option so we can bypass that discussion. Just curious if this is how the market is going to be for the next year or so until the new vehicle/chip shortages are resolved, if they do get resolved.

Insights are much appreciated.

In the U.P of Michigan local dealer has a 2015 for 29500 with 70k....IMO wrecked lowers the value a lot. You never know the quality of the repairs. Most accidents repairs are done by the low bid (insurance) and often with low bid work, shortcuts are taken to make a profit.

No one knows what's going to happen with the market, one can hope once the new vehicle supply starts to normalize, markets will as well.

As already mentioned, the main issue with rebuilt/salvage is that one doesn't know the quality of the work completed and parts used.

If you can see the before and after pictures, invoices/details about the work completed and what was replaced, it may help mitigate this risk.

However, it may never drive the way it should due to the accident.

This very thing was discussed about two weeks ago.
Yes....a 7 year old truck could cost $30K.
Also, if the vehicle damage from an accident was minor, like a door skin replaced, or just a bumper or front fender without any frame damage, no big deal....but as was said, the likelihood of OEM to do the repair is small unless the owner insisted.

1. IMO, no.
2. Depends on many factors: model/options of the truck (V6/V8, LS/LT/LTZ etc.), extent of the damage, how was it repaired etc. etc. Each case is different.
3. No. At least not to me. I look at things differently than many others, but 100K is really nothing to me. As long as it has been taken care of. I had no hesitation buying my 2016 with 179K last August since it was maintained to a tee, oil was changed every 5-7K miles and everything was documented with receipts.

I guess one of the questions will also be that whether there is somebody willing to actually finance a 7 year old truck for $30K. Well..., I'm sure there is somebody, but what the terms are is another question.

Damn I'm glad I bought mine when I did. What I paid for it sounds like a freaking bargain now. For **** and giggles last week I checked how much Carvana would pay for it and it was actually more than what I paid for it after taxes. :o

Exactly the same here. The same truck w/ the my current mileage I bought in 2/20 is now for sale at $8K more than I paid.

I bought my 2015 in October of 2017, with 26K miles on it for $25K cash.....
I'll bet I can get at least that for it now, with 123K on it!!!

Salvage title wouldn't scare me if the truck was repaired correctly and was a very good deal. Maybe some states are different but I didn't have any issues at all with financing or insuring a salvage titled D**** back in 90 and it was built from two recks. Never an issue with the vehicle either. Look it over really good and weigh the price against a clean one.

I agree. When I look for trucks that seem to good to be true and don't offer a carfax, I google the vin and most of the time I find the vehicle on an auction site and the damage is pretty extensive in many cases.

High mileage isn't the worst thing for me since I put on about 5k miles a years, ride my motorcycle in the summer, but I struggle with replacing my 08 with 128k with a 2014 and up with 100k miles. 13 year old vehicle in the midwest is showing it's age in rust, most adamantly with the dreaded wheel well rust.
