Vinyl cover repair

Postby esox07 [OP] » Oct 30 2016, 3:48pm

I have an Access Laredo roll up vinyl cover on my truck. It is three and a half year old and I just noticed the first imperfection in the cover. Right now it is a small "pin head sized" spot where the vinyl has come off. I don't want it to spread so I am wondering the best way to patch it up. I thinking maybe some black RTV sealant but thought there is probably something better suited or even made specifically for this purpose.

Again, it is extremely minor at this point, but with another Wisconsin winter on the way, I want to get it taken care of now.

Here is a photo. The problem is right on top of a rail and probably from me setting stuff on top of there.
Any suggestions are welcome.

Vinyl cover repair

Postby ferraiolo1 » Oct 30 2016, 3:50pm

Being that it's on the edge and is under stress there isn't much you can do that will last. They make patches that would go underneath if it was in an open area. Luckily These covers are cheap enough to just replace.

Hmmm, the problem is with the actual vinyl on top. The fabric is fine and I just want to ensure the vinyl doesn't keep peeling. I was hoping someone knew of a vinyl repair product made for this kind of purpose.

They do make vinyl/leather repair kits for about the cost of a tube of RTV. I've used it with ok results on seats, door panels and dashes, obviously longevity being the issue on seats.

Do you have a name for the product and possibly a source to purchase it?

Jasen:
Thanks, I like 3M products as well. I see it is available at my local Walmart for the exact same price as Amazon.com. I will probably stop down and pick up a kit today or tomorrow.

Thanks, exactly what I was looking for.

Yea one of those vinyl patches should help you.
If it does end up ripping or coming apart you might want to consider a canvas one like the one I have, tough as nails and very easy maintenance. Looks like a convertible top.

I will try the 3M product. I expect this cover to last at least two more years minimum. I just checked and a brand new replacement cover from the factory would cost me $180 which isn't bad really.
